The View-Doo You Might Do So Well

Pros An absolutely great monitor for the price.
Cons It's big - and that's me reaching for a con.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great resolution, sharp picture, all the features you need, no problems. Boom, there it is.
It was much earlier this year that I decided to take the plunge and build my own computer system for home. I figured this would be a cost-effective way of handling things, versus buying a complete system from a vendor.

After a lot of research and a few months of spending here and there, I put together what I felt was the best system for my money. One of the components I purchased was the Samsung Syncmaster 950p.

Admittedly, I'm not the Rhodes Scholar of monitors. However, I've used them for years - long enough to know when I'm working with a piece of crap, or a really nice one. At work we're using monitors that aren't bad, but could be better - so I figured I'd do a bit of research rather than ask folks here at the office.

One of my first stops was epinions (gee, go figure). Most folks seemed to really like this monitor, though they complained that it was too bulky/cumbersome/hard to maneuver. I checked out some other monitors as well, and all the reviews seemed to run somewhere along the same lines.

I also checked PC World's "Top 10 19-Inch Monitors" article (http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,44625,00.asp) and it had listed the Samsung 950p as #1. Granted, this may have changed by the publishing of this epinion, but I feel it's advice you can still use.

So I shopped around, and bought the 950p through samsungmonitor.com for about $259 (not counting shipping). It arrived in a few days, and I was all sorts of excited to get it out of the box.

No lies from the other review authors - this puppy was HEAVY. I actually strained my back slightly getting it out of the box, but then again, my back always gives me problems. I should have lifted with the legs.

When it finally came time to hook it up to the computer itself, the picture was clear and crisp. The software that came with it took practically no time to load - brief in comparison to other software packages I've dealt with.

The best resolution, according to what I've read (and my own experimentation) for this machine is 1280 x 1024. I've run it at 1600 x 1200, which runs with no problems, but my preference is the earlier of the two.

The adjustment panel for the display pops out of the front in a neat manner which was well-designed, in my opinion. I've messed with it slightly...once. That's all it needed.

Like I said up top, and as others have mentioned, it's heavy and big. I don't mind that, because I think it's a classy-looking monitor, but you'll want to make sure you've got a good table or desk for this.

I highly recommend this monitor. I would have no need to replace it with anything else, and if anything, I'd buy a second one solely to run my computer with dual monitors. It's worth the dual-head video card.
