The Bottom Line:
The Samsung Trance has enough Pros to outweigh the cons. It's cheap, has great sound quality, easy syncing, bluetooth and a whole lot more.I wish it did have video, though.
The Samsung Trance is my second phone, and I am happy, because my last phone(which I posted a review on) was like brick. It had an antenna, extra large battery pack, and was scratched up from over 5 years or so of wear and tear. That's why I was very excited about geting the Samsung Trance, with it's sleek design, touch sensetive front panel, and a high quality speaker. I bought the phone from the Verizon store for $50, because I qualified for an upgrade. Here's what I think of the phone after having it for just over a month...
Firstly, I am a little ticked off at Verizon, as they lowered the price to $30, only 2 weeks of ownership. Putting that aside, this is a great reason for you guys to go out and purchase the phone.
The phone comes in Black/Red and all Black. I chose the all black; just a personal preference. The Trance is a slider phone, with indents on the side to get a better grip. The bottom panel is home to the keypad, while the top panel holds the screen and the touch sensitive pad. The screen is parallel to the face of the phone, and when the phone is off you can barely see the screen. Overall, the phone looks amazing. The touch senstive controls set it apart fom other phones though, both pro & con. NOTE: Touch sensitive does not mean touch screen. There aren't any physical buttons on the top panel of the phone. When the phone is on, the touch senstive area has backlit icons that represent the arrows, ok, clr, etc... when you tap on the face of the phone, your touch is recognized, and the selected actions are taken. One problem I have with the touch sensitive controls is that at times they can be a little bit unresponsive. This doesn't happen too often though. When the controls are working well, they are extremely responsive. It is a bit ironic.
In terms of the amount of keys on the front face of the touch sensitive pad, there aren't many when compared to a normal phone. There are four directional keys, a clr key in the bottom right corner, the OK key in the center, and the two selectio keys on the top corners. On the bottom left, there is a music library key. The Trance is a phone shifted more towards music, though that doesn't mean you shouldn't get it if you don't listen to music. If the music key is selected, you are directed to your music library. It is very simple to add music to your library. You need to download a program called Rhapsody off of verizon's website. The link is in the instruction manual. You can then import CD's into Rhapsody, and then sync with your phone, via the included USB cable. No subscriptions or credit cards are needed. If you have music in the library, it is played through the Bang & Olufsen ICEpower speakers, which are located on the back of the phone. The speakers have very good quality sound; better than you would expect from a phone. But if you would rather listen through your headphones, that's fine too. The Samsung Trance features a standard earphone jack on the side.
The Trance has a 1.3 megapixel camera, but the camera has very good quality pictures. It even has a bunch of cool effects and picture taking modes modes. The big problem that I have is that the Trance has absolutely no video capabilities. For a cell phone in this day and age to not possess video capabilities, I find it a bit unusual. Even my old "brick" could take some video. I think that this should have been written on the front of the box. The Verizon employee didn't even say a word.
Overall, the Samsung Trance is a great phone that is well worth the price. It may not have video capabilities, but the great speakers, sleek design, and neat touch controls outweigh the bad.
