The Bottom Line:
A tv unlikely to disappoint the most discerning eye. Fantastic picture at a decent price. Just hope you never have to deal with their support.
After thorough research of professional reviews and specs, I had settled into three TVs for my needs. My requirements were for an LCD that was around 55" in size and under $3500.
The three options I came to were:#1 Samsung UN55B8000#2 LG LH90#3 Sony Bravia KDL-55XBR8
After seeing them all at the store, I went with my #1 choice. I did not buy an extended warranty. 2 months later, I remain totally pleased with the tv. Now here is the kicker...Even my wife notices the tv is "different". Despite being the number 1 consumer of our tv, she usually complains with a new tv purchase because its "not necessary". That said, this time she's happy...I think. She characterizes the picture quality as follows: "all tv shows look like a soap opera now". Translation: I think she means that there is a noticeable improvement in the quality of the display and picture lighting. She hasn't complained about the look of the tv once either. This speaks volumes! our whole family is happy with the tv.
The few irritations I have experienced since purchasing the tv:
1. Samsung support is terrible. I called to find out the reason why my tv wouldn't update to the latest firmware using the "connected to the internet" method -- instead of USB stick. They gave me the runaround (not worth going into the detail) for the causes but at the end of the day, it just doesn't work. You must update via. USB (assuming you need to update).
2. I had some real problems with my PS3 connecting to it on several of the HDMI ports. For an unknown reason, video only displays properly on HDMI 4 connection. All others render the PS but show ugly/annoying static on the screen with the odd flashing of the screen on/off.
3. Yahoo widgets are a bit of a yawner. They are somewhat slow and tedious to navigate. Instead, I plugged in a Mac Mini to the tv with wireless keyboard and mouse and now I have a full computer experience from the screen.
