Sansa Connect - Awesome MP3 Player... But Wait, There's More!!

Pros Can listen to internet radio via WiFi, and Zing songs into your MP3 player!
Cons WiFi slow to buffer depending on connection.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I would recommend this MP3 player for those who love a variety of music. It has great sound quality with the headphones on, and is very durable.
The Sansa Connect MP3 Player is an MP3 player with many features not found in other, comparably priced MP3 players. My husband purchased this Sansa Connect for $149.99, for my birthday in August, and I have had an excellent experience thus far.

Features:
The Sansa Connect is about 2 in. x 4 in. and about 1/4 in thick. It comes with an arm strap that is removable, earbuds, an A/C charger/adaptor, a USB cable, protective case (felt bag- worthless IMO). You also get a quick start guide and a CD that helps you install the recommended download program, Yahoo Music Jukebox.

The Connect has room for 4 GB of music or photos. If you'd like, you can view photos stored on your microSD card, via the card slot. You can download music in the traditional fashion, off of any supported site, and organize the songs by album, genre, or create your own playlist. While listening to your downloaded songs, you can play them as you've organized them, alphabetically or you can shuffle them. The Connect allows you to fast forward during play or skip songs. The Connect also has a built in speaker, so that you can listen to it, without your earphones on. This is a great feature while driving or just listening to The Connect at home. The built in speaker is a bit "tinny" but is not bad at all for an added feature, not found in other MP3 players. The "Now Playing" feature shows details about the songs you are listening to- showing the album cover for the song, if available, the year, artist and song name. All of this is pretty standard fare for an MP3 player, right??

But Wait! There's More!!

The Sansa Connect has a great feature, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. By subscribing to Yahoo! Music Unlimited To Go, you can listen to Internet Radio from any open WiFi connection. This means that while I'm working out at the YMCA, I can connect to their WiFi, and select from a huge list of Internet Radio Stations, sorted by Genre, and listen to the music. Pretty Cool, right? for about $12.00 per month, I can listen to all of the "Pop Hits of the 80s" or "Urban Rock" or "Country Love Songs" I want. With the variety of genres listed, there is something for everyone.

But Wait! There's More!!

On top of all the fun I can have surfing multiple music genres on the internet, I can HAVE THOSE SONGS!! Yes, you heard me. While listening, if I like the song I'm hearing, I push a cute little button called "ZING". When I "Zing" a song, it's mine. Sort of. I am actually subscribed to the song. Which means it's mine till I let my subscription run out. I was very unsure of how I'd like this feature at first, I mean, if I'm paying to listen to the music, and I Zing it, shouldn't I get to keep it? But I've found over time, that I don't mind subscribing, because I eventually get tired of the song, anyway. And given that I have a year's subscription, I have plenty of time to actually purchase the song if I don't tire of it. With this subscription plan, if I do choose to purchase the song, it's currently only .79 cents, versus .99 cents everywhere else. And while all of this sounds a bit confusing, I am NOT a techi of any sort, and was able to figure the system out pretty easily. As a matter of fact the user interface with the Sansa MP3 players is overall so much easier than the Ipod Nano, I much prefer it. My daughters have Nanos, and I'd rather deal with my Sansa than their Ipods any day.

Even More Features!

With the Sansa Connect, you can also "Get More Music" which means that you can activate the Get More Music feature, and Yahoo will show and play more songs like the ones already in your MP3 player. If you like them, you can ZING them right into your player, and if you don't, well, forward to the next song.

The Sansa Connect also allows you to communicate via Yahoo Messenger friends about what music you are listening to. You can trade playlists and music recommendations via messenger. I have not used this feature, but I can imagine it would be quite popular with the teen crowd.

You can also customize your Sansa Connect, by turning off or on the WiFi Mode setting when you are traveling or want to extend battery life. You can set the bass on the built in speaker, and adjust the display to your preferences.

I have also called Sansa Support and was genuinely thrilled when I got an articulate, knowledgeable tech person, who was able to fix my problem on the first try. The firmware in the Sansa Connect updates itself periodically, when you connect to WiFi. You do nothing and the player updates itself! You will just see a message on the screen that says "update in progress, do not turn your player off".

A few downers:

At times I find the Connect spends a lot of time buffering, depending on the WiFi that I am connected to. This ruins the listening quality, obviously. However, it does well in most situations, such as at home or at the gym.

I don't like having to subscribe to get the WiFi feature, but I understand what I am paying for. And the discount on song purchases makes a difference, so the trade off is worth it to me. Without the subscription, the
Connect is still a great MP3 player, with plenty of memory.

If you forget to customize the speaker to NOT TURN ON automatically when the headphones come out, the whole gym hears that you like old REO Speedwagon, which is okay, because many of the other old folks working out like it, too.

The Yahoo Music Jukebox program is a pain in the neck, much like Itunes. It can be picky, at times doesn't recognize that your Sansa is connected, and takes forever to think about downloading the songs at times. (I use regular old DSL). Compared to Itunes, I'd say it is about the same in aggravation factor.

Another Plus!

Oh, and the Sansa Connect is quite durable. I've dropped it numerous times at the gym, and a couple of times in the parking lot, and it's still running great.
