The Bottom Line:
Great portable radio and a joy to use. Plays for hours on my four 11,000 mah "D" rechargeable NMh batteries.
This past summer I picked up one of the last of this model in a downtown Baltimore electronics store for about $150. Out of the box it was just slightly (very slightly) off frequency on the MW band. With a light "bump" to the oscillator trimmer, it now dead on and is a very nice set. This one is definety not a run of the mill cheapo set like the old multiband portables of the past. AM sensitivity and selectivity are very good. The narrow band setting is tight on the audio but this is a desireable thing when seeking weak signals amongst the locally strong ones. It does a very good job on the shortwave frequencies, the mark of which is to pick up the DX amateur QSO's abiet CW or SSB phone with decent quality and frequency accuracy. Sensitivity on FM is very good, as I think that there is an FET in the front end. There is stock two ceramic broadband 10.7khz Murata filters in the IF strip for the selectivity. With it's high sensitivity and it's ability to be used in Europe, I opted to replace both the ceramic filters successfully down to 110khz without any knoticeable degredation in sound quality, even in stereo. This dramatically improved FM selectivity. Even without my adjustments (I'm real picky) I would recommend this Sangean to anyone who likes radio. Very nice.
