The Bottom Line:
This is an excellent choice for a home theater, and much less expensive than an HD television.
I bought the Sanyo PLV-Z4 projector as the main part of my newly installed home theater system. I chose the Sanyo after weeks of online research where I seriously considered the Optoma and Panasonic projectors. I chose the Sanyo because of its 7000:1 contrast ratio, free bulb and screen offer, as well as the longer warranty. Another excellent feature of the Sanyo is the horizontal and vertical lens shift, which helps to create an excellent image on the screen.
The Optoma that I had been using had a 2500:1 contrast ratio, and 2000 lumen brightness; however, the picture from the Sanyo is much clearer and more detailed. Also, the signal from my HD cable box for HD channels is excellent.
I have a Monster subwoofer cable and Monster coax cables for the audio signals, as well as Provantage HDMI cables for the video signals. The HDMI cables go from the back of my DVD player and HD cable box directly to the switchbox, and then out to the Sanyo projector via another HDMI cable. The switchbox allows me to switch between the cable and DVD without having to disconnect any cables. The HDMI cables do not go through my receiver.
My systems is as follows:
Sanyo PLV-Z4 projector
Da-Lite 77' W x 92" L 2.5 gain glass-beaded pull-down screen
Harmon-Kardon AVR 635 home theater receiver
Oppo upconverting DVD player
Velodyne 10" subwoofer
JBL tower front speakers
Cambridge Soundworks rear speakers
Boston Acoustics center speaker
Motorola HD cable box
HDMI switchbox
3 HDMI cables
