Style, clarity and function in one **updated Dec 2004**
Pros
Picture quality, sleek style/design, multifunction remote, built in VHS/DVD.
Cons
No numeric volume display, just a bar.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Style, features, function are all excellent. Sleek and clean style. Multi functional-UNIVERSAL remote. Great picture!
Style = A; Picture clarity = A; Size = A; function = A; remote = A; sound = A.
This is a 27" flat screen TV with built in VHS and DVD players. 27" appears to be the largest of these combo TV's. I looked everywhere for larger and inquired with all Salesmen who said they will not make larger.
The design is a satin silver cabinet. The speakers are located in the lower left and right corners, in front which is nice as opposed to side mounted speakers. Sound is clear and steady even from channel to channel.
Not only is the TV screen flat but so is the front of the lower cabinet. I mention this because some other brands have concaved or convexed lower fronts. Both the VCR and DVD players on this Sharp set are flush in front along with separate control buttons. The buttons located directly below each player are also sleek and low profile. This is especially good for us since we have a two-year old daughter and the TV is accessible to her. These buttons seem to be less of a temptation for her than our previous TV where the buttons were more prominent.
The remote is multi-function indeed. In fact, it is a programmable UNIVERSAL remote that even functions as the cable box remote! The top is hinged at the left and opens to reveal additional functions below. Only the top is back lit. The only negative I have so far is that the volume control is displayed only as a solid bar that increases or decreases as controlled. Other remotes use a number system which at least allows you to know with certainty what level is best at certain times (like when the baby is sleeping). Otherwise it is great.
The 4-head VCR in addition to operating well has a super fast rewind so much better than our previous VCR. The manual says it is 400x rewind speed.
Both the DVD and VCR operate very much like any of the components we've owned previously and so we have not experienced any frustration with trying to operate them. We have not used all functionality of the remote yet but so far it has been relatively easy to work. The DVD plays other formats which include: CD, CD-R, MP3 but we have not attempted these. The VCR states that it records a separate channel than the one being view, a feature others did not offer. We've not attempted this yet.
The set has front and back AV plugs. The front plugs are consealed and protected by a small, hinged cover which we like very much. All other sets I viewed had exposed plugs. We have used the front AV terminals to playback our digital videos with ease.
The set specs detail other functions and qualities that may mean more to a technical junkie and while I typically research products at length, I'm very satisfied that this set offers great quality without me having to know the specs.

Good news, The TV, vcr and dvd have all held up well. No problems or repairs to report. We have recorded numerous shows using the vcr and timer and it's worked well. We have played VHS and DVD's probably hundreds of hours worth and all has worked well.
If there are any concerns it would be that it seems to take the DVD a "long time" (probably like 20+ seconds) to load. I guess it just seems long.
We've also plugged our digital movie camera into the jacks and played movies directly through the TV and it worked well.
The remote continues to work fully without problems.
All in all we are very pleased with the set.
