Great Minidisc Device.. Super Bargain!

Pros Excellent Price, Durable, Great Sound Quality, On-the-fly level set
Cons Thicker than other minidisc portable devices
Recommended it? Yes
For someone that won't stand for the quality of a cassette portable and would like to record live events, the Sharp MD-MS702 is a very affordable, functionally powerful recording device that will give them a fair chance of getting into the portable recording hobby.

Last June I had planned to attend a local concert and record the concert for personal appreciation, but I did not own a portable cassette recorder. I had heard about Minidisc and read that they are more versatile and provide higher sound quality than portable cassette recorders. At the time, the Sharp MD-MS702 was the least expensive portable minidisc recorder and had everything a novice such as myself would need to get started (aside from the microphones). As of last June, the Sharp MD-MS702 was priced $200 after the $50 rebate from Sharp. Since then I believe the price of the unit has dropped to about $200 without a rebate.

The Sharp MD-MS702 includes an optical chord (for connecting to your digital output device, such as a Compact Disc player), lithium battery, corded remote control and pair of headphones. The headphones are not the best sounding, so I would recommend using another set. The lithium battery can record about 3 hours or play for 5 hours depending on how the minidisc device is used. Sharp also manufactures a small alkaline battery case that can be attached to the side of the Sharp MD-MS702 to allow longer recording/playing time. The corded remote control hasn't been very useful to me mostly because I can effectively control the device from the buttons on the machine. I did plug in the remote when I first got the minidisc device and found the animation of a fish swimming across the bright, blue luminescent display amusing. I discovered that you'll only see the fish animation if you don't enter a track title into the memory of a minidisc.

Many other portable minidisc recorders are slimmer than the Sharp MD-MS702, but this device is still easy to tuck away in your pant pocket when you go out running or taking a stroll through the park. It also can take a great deal of punishment. I accidentally dropped it about 3 feet from the floor at the concert I attended and not a scratch was rendered. The sound quality during the recording wasn't even affected. I felt very relieved that I hadn't broken my minidisc device.

The functions on the Sharp MD-MS702 are very easy to learn. I was too excited when I got my first Minidisc recorder that I didn't even bother looking through the instruction booklet. Cutting, splicing and deleting audio tracks are a snap. Titling the minidisc or one of its' tracks is very easy to do as well.

You may be wondering how the Sharp MD-MS702 is better than other low-priced portable minidisc devices. For one, the Sharp MD-MS702 can record while some of the Sony minidisc devices of similar price can only play. Another benefit is that the recording level can be set in real-time as you are recording. Other minidisc recorders will add a slight pause before their recording level can be changed. This is especially handy when you are first starting to record a show because you can immediately see if the recording will be overpowered and quickly make the appropriate adjustment. A handy decibel meter on the main LCD screen shows if the sound level is too high or too low.

The Sharp MD-MS702 does a great job playing minidiscs. Using the digital, optical chord I digitally recorded audio from my CD player into the Sharp. The recording sounded as brilliant and clear as the original source CD.

It mostly depends on the microphones you use for live recording, but the Sharp can record as good as the microphones can "pick-up" sound. I had never recorded a live concert before. It was very easy to initiate recording and to maintain it during the show I attended. Just press the "record" button and then the "play" button. Simple as that!

Overall, I think the Sharp MD-MS702 is for someone that doesn't know much about minidisc, wants to record live events and is on a small budget. The ease of use, durability and attractiveness make this the ideal portable minidisc device for anyone who hasn't owned a minidisc device before.
