Awesome Cheap Minidisc w/ $50 rebate!
Pros
great sound, low price, easy interface
Cons
heavy, bulkier than other MD recorders
Recommended it?
Yes
I bought this product recently to find there was also a $50 rebate to its normal $239 price tag. Therefore the pricetag becomes a great $189, making it one of the cheapest minidisc recorders out there. However the rebate only lasts till 4/1/00 so get it soon!
With such a low price, surprisingly the package with the recorder is very complete. It comes with the recorder, headphones, a remote, a strap, a pouch, digital/digital wire, analog/linein wire, AC adapter, li-ion battery, and a AAA battery attach on. The playback time is a total of 10 hrs, a decent amount for a player/recorder.
The sound, the recording functions are both great. The MD recorder can record almost flawless sound and provides awesome bass. This was a surprise to me as well because like many of you out there, you would think the sound compression used would damage the sound to a listenable extent, but it actually is so minor you cannot tell.
A unique feature on the MS-722 is the jog dial which allows you to name the tracks much easier. Unlike other MDs, where you have to press the button to cycle through letters, the dial on the front can be returned to enter the letters, a very time saving aspect of the MS-722.
The headphones included are definitely not the best, but they are suitable for the MD/recorders purposes. If you are a hardcore fan of music and have a definite need for better quality, get yourself the Sony earbud phones, those are an excellent choice for MD players because they conserve energy and are small.
The only real problems with the MS-722 is probably the design of the unit, which is somewhat bulky. It is bigger than most MD recorders today, and doesn't look as sleek as the newer models. Still that is not too much of a let down. If prefer something more portable and light, it is a good idea to get the MS-722 as a recorder, and then buy a portable MD player, which is much thinner and lighter than a recorder/player. But as a starting point for new MD fans, this unit is a definite buy in trying MD and seeing whether you may like it or not.
