I've had a Sharp 722 MiniDisk unit for 21 months and it is as good as the specifications say, but I'd definitely say DO NOT BUY it.
Allowing recording from both Digital-Optical line in and also a mike jack the Sharp 722 is versatile enough to use as your first introduction to MiniDisk, but the problems that arose with my unit may put you off the whole format.
The battery life is superb and the ability to simply add a AA battery to the side means that you should never be out of power.
The headphone controller is okay but the actual phones could be better.
The Jog-dial featured on the front of the unit is quite good at entering track names, etc, but with little use mine stopped working 9 months into use (and then again, after repair, 12 months later).
The laser unit for recording is so delicate that mine gave up 2 weeks after buying it - the shop swapped the unit with no quibbles since this happens so commonly. The unit packed in again after 8 months and was quickly repaired by Sharp. After another 12 months I'm in the same position but now that the warrenty has expired it will cost me #80 (about $120) to get it fixed.
Despite finding the unit useful I can't tolerate the idea of paying #80 per year for the light use I give it.
