I purchased my Sharp 722 in February, 2000 from buy.com and took advantage of the $50 rebate being offered from Sharp. Up to this day, I have not been disappointed with that investment. I purchased the unit to upgrade from the Sharp 702 player I'd purchased in July, 1999, which I had since sold to my brother. Anyway, on to the review!
THE UNIT:
The 722 is a fully functional portable MD player/recorder. The machine is more feature laden than the 702, but similar in size and weight. The machine has a slot-loading mechanism, which seems sturdier than the clam shell mechanism common to Sony and Aiwa models. All of the controls are conveniently placed and are quite easy to use. The unit also has a jog ring which allows for easier titling on the unit than those without one. My only complaint with the unit itself is the record button, which is a bit large in my opinion and just a bit too easy to accidentally depress. Not a large problem, just a small annoyance.
FUNCTIONALITY:
The volume level on the unit is very good. I've had no trouble hearing and using the unit in public places. The analog recordings the unit makes are of excellent audio quality. I have yet to use the machine to make a digital recording. The unit features two input ports: one for analog/digital input and another for microphone input. This unit features the ability to adjust input level while recording, which is a feature absent on Sony models. The unit also features a mode where the various setting of the machine can be adjusted easily.
The battery life on the unit is much improved over the 702. I get roughly 7.5 hours of play-time per battery charge. The unit also charges quickly, taking roughly 2.5 hours to fully recharge.
ACCESSORIES:
The machine comes with headphones, a miniplug to RCA 'y' cable, AC adaptor, wrist strap, carrying bag, TOS-link to optical-miniplug, documentation, and some lovely plastic packing and twist-ties! Everything included works well, but the quality of the included headphones leaves something to be desired.
OVERALL:
I have been very pleased with this unit. It is rugged, has good audio quality, is feature-laden, easy to use, and a excellent machine to own.
