Never buy CD's Again
Pros
Very portable, easy to use, great sound quality
Cons
Output could use a tune-up, there are smaller models available
Recommended it?
Yes
I love music, let's get that out of the way right now. Until I had purchased my minidisc player, I never left my house without my walkman (of course now I don't leave without my MD). I have shoeboxes full of tapes, some on the verge of disintegration. So when I saw that minidiscs were actually taking off, I decided to do some research.
A few of my friends had already bought Sonys but they has some complaints: it was too big (this was over a year ago), the remote was awkward. But the concept was amazing. You'd never have to buy CD's again as long as you could find someone with the music you wanted. And the minidiscs themselves can be picked up for under $2 a disc. After perusing many many sites rating MD player/recorders, I finally ended up with the Sharp MD-722 and have not yet lived to regret it.
First positive feature is the size. While it is not as small as the new Sony model (I don't remember the model no.) it still fits in the palm of your hand. It's general size is based on the size of the actual disc itself, making the player totally portable.
Second positive thing about it, is how easy it is to use. I am not a very technical person and I was able to operate the machine with precious few glances at the easy-to-follow manual. The first night I had it I was recording my own discs, playing around with track orders, and naming the tracks.
Another positive thing about the machine is how it looks. People have stopped me and asked me what I was listening to. The remote looks like a stopwatch and the actual machine looks like it is a lot of fun to play with. And it is.
Also great about the player is the remote. While you cannot do EVERYTHING with the remote, you can control all the basic functions needed such as volume, random play, bass, display, and shuttling the tracks. The remote is also back-it which makes it easy to see what you are doing.
Finally, what I have loved best about the MD-722 is being able to make music mixes that have the same sound quality as a CD. The discs themselves are fairly durable and the sound quality far surpasses that of the tape.
As for some of the drawbacks:
The battery life could be longer, though it does come with an attachment to extend battery life a bit more.
The sound output is okay as long as you are using headphones. You have to make a volume adjustment or two when attaching the MD to a stereo/speakers. It's not a major hassle but it is another step in hearing the music out loud.
But on the whole I am quite satisfied with my purchase and highly recommend this model to someone looking to get their feet wet in the minidisc culture.
