The Bottom Line:  This is for the person who wants a phone that says look at me
This is my first sidekick as they don’t openly sell these in Canada. Because I live outside of the US I had to make sure that I purchased an unlocked model in order for it to function in my carrier. This wasn’t so much of a problem I just inserted my SIM card and it worked right away.

Another one of the main reasons why I wanted the LX is because it’s a smartphone. It’s important for me to be able to do everything on one device. I don’t want to have to carry around a separate mp3 player, phone, camera, calendar planner all in my bag. Unfortunately the sidekick didn’t really cut it in some of these areas so I was still carrying around a camera in my bag.

The design of the sidekick is the main reason for my purchase. At the time I bought it there were very few phones out with qwerty keyboards that I liked. And with added features like mood lights and swivel screen, in Canada this phone is unheard of and I like having things other people haven’t seen before.

I bought the sidekick LX in the midnight blue colour, but I much would have preferred black over blue or brown. It never chipped or scratched and the swivel always worked great for me. Although there have been a lot of complaints of the screen snapping off too easily this has never happened for me.

The sidekick LX is a bulky phone. It is heavy and you can’t turn it sideways so it requires you to use 2 hands at all times. It doesn’t have a touch screen. The microphone is always a little too quiet and at all times I got really bad feedback. These were probably just side effects from not using the phone in the country it was made to be used in.

Staying true to the sidekick line of phones the battery life is terrible. My LX would not last a full 24 hours without needing to be charged again – and this was without constant use all battery savers on and keeping the phone on sleep setting. On the days when I played music for 2 hours between commuting back and forth to and from work it lasted about 12 hours before it died or needed to be charged again.
Sidekick’s qwerty keyboard is very easy to use. After probably 20 minutes of constant typing you will pick up the hang of it. I would recommend this phone for a man who wanted to start texting easily without confusion but the other features of the phone may not be simple enough for this type of person.

Menu in the sidekick is very cool. It has bubbles that you can slide between to choose your selection. There are hundreds of thousands of downloadable themes to customize the look of this menu online – as well as the sounds and key tones.

Personally I found the sound on the sidekick (while playing music) was very dependent on the type of headphones you’re using. But I never found it quite loud enough to drown out the sound of the bus while I was on it so it’ll lose points there from me and I love to listen to music.

The camera sucks in dark lighting. The flash is way too bright. In natural light I found it to be much better than many other cameras on the market at the time. The screen is clear and can be very bright should you so need it to be.

If someone was looking to buy a sidekick LX now I would say that it is a little out of date and you won’t get top notch in the features you are looking for. There are no apps since that technology came out shortly after but you can connect it to your instant messenger program. You can get online with 3G and it works well.

One huge drawback I know is important to a lot of people is the ringtones. The ringtones Tmobile gives you aren’t very good so you will probably want your own. The problem with this is that you cannot just take a song and assign it as your ringtone. You have to go into the Tmobile catalogue to pay for one. These are on average cost roughly $4.99. Not worth it in my opinion. And if you’re like me and want to use the phone internationally you won’t be able to get into the Tmobile catalogue. So this left me with keeping the phone on vibrate or silent constantly. Luckily the vibration is customizable and it works great.

Overall sidekick LX is a great phone for online surfing, texting, and communicating with your friends or coworkers in general. But if you’re looking for a normal phone without any special features, or glitches then this is not it. The sidekick LX is a phone for people who want to show off and don’t mind sacrificing a little to do so.

If another sidekick was ever made I would ask them to make it a touch screen. And smaller, less bulky and not have to require 2 hands to make or answer a phone call. By now this phone is outdated my advice is to wait for the next one.
