Sharp VC-H993U

Pros Great price, durable, great picture/sound quality, rewind full length tape in 1 minute! Nice features.
Cons Do not lose remote. Unit controls hard to use for things like programming. Otherwise, none.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Buy it. For $100 or less, you get great sound, picture, and build quality, as well as features like front a/v, RAPID rewind, etc. Great value.
This vcr is among the best for the price!

SOUND:

This vcr has great sound. The hi-fi stereo sound is clear and not distorted at all as far as we can tell using tv-set speakers.

EASE OF USE/FUNCTIONS:

I find this vcr fairly straightforward to operate. The remote has all of the buttons you would expect, and is logically laid out. I will say however that doing things like programming a show would be extremely annoying if the remote were ever lost, as the unit itself is fairly user-unfriendly in design.

This vcr does have some nice convenience features on the unit though, like front (and rear, of course) audio/video in-out connections, which have video and audio left-right. Some other features that are nice are a little lit-up indicator that looks like a vhs tape which (surprise!) comes on if a tape is in the machine. There is another one as well which tells you that the timer is programmed for taping, another one that tells you the current tape speed (recording quality) setting, and there is a clock/tape progress/current channel display on the vcr face.

Something else that is convenient and fairly entertaining as well is the rapid rewind feature. When I say rapid, I mean REWIND A 6 HOUR TAPE IN 1 MINUTE RAPID! You get to the end of a tape. The vcr automatically starts rewinding. It rewinds at a fairly slow speed for a few seconds, and then it starts picking up speed rapidly. After a few more seconds, it sounds like your vcr is possessed by demons, and they are all trying to break free at the same moment. It's good that it slows down as it gets toward either end of the tape, because if they hadn't I imagine you would have a very good chance of the tape being completely unusable after one viewing. ^_^

It has 'S-VHS Quasi playback', meaning that it can play but not record in 'Super VHS, or S-VHS' mode. This is irrelevant though, as this vcr has great sound/picture quality already, due in part to it having 19 micron heads. Also, it has 'Sharp Super Picture circuitry', and functions on the remote like replay last 15 seconds, auto-repeat (for entire tape), 'slow motion' (really just the vcr doing 'pause' rapidly - and you can vary the speed), 1, 2, and 3 minute advancing (for getting through commercials during playback), a vcr lockdown function so that no one can do anything with the vcr (unless they hit the button again), and a 'zero back' button, so that when you have set the tape progress display to 00:00 at a point on the tape, you can hit this button and have the vcr return you to that point.

PICTURE QUALITY:

Excellent. This vcr records superbly in either EP or SP modes. I have recorded probably close to 100 hours of anime and other shows in EP, and some SP with this vcr, and I have been very pleased with the excellent sound and picture quality.

DURABILITY:

Our Sharp VC-H993U VCR is about 2 years old, and it still works as well as the day we got it. Nothing has ever broken, all functions work perfectly, and the (plastic) exterior is in excellent condition, with no wear. We have never had any problems with this vcr!

ALSO:
Though this particular model may no longer be in stores, you can still find functionally identical ones, for about $80!
