The Bottom Line:
I bought two of these systems: one for the living room area, and one for my hobby room.
I repaired a unit like this for my daughter who had purchased one about 6 years ago. It was a JVC. I had never worked on a unit like this before, and decided to purchase one like it. The only one that I could find locally was the Sharp XL-HP500. I wasn't interested in some of the spaced-out looking models that are presently available. I had some old mini-tapes that I hadn't heard in quite a while, and some CD's that I had purchased for Christmas music that I played from a portable CD player through an amplified speaker system.
The Sharp unit handles all the music needs that I have without purchasing thousands of dollars worth of equipment. I like to listen to music while I'm working on the computer, and this unit, with the AM-FM Stereo Tuner system, and the bass reflex speaker system with the ducted ports makes the bass sounds roll out right down to the bottom of the music spectrum. I like the bass presence, but don't care for a pounding, mind-bending bass. This unit has an equalization system that can be adjusted to tone the highs, or lows, or both, to what my preference is. If I want the pounding bass, I can have it; or trim it down. The extreme highs are tinny sounding with the tweeters, but this can be equalized down with the system equalization system. The complete range can be used with headphones.
To enhance the music experience with the Sharp, I purchased the Sony MDR-V700DJ headphones to wear when I don't want to disturb others with the music. This makes the system complete and most satisfactory.
It has forty programmable selections for the tuner, and a remote selector.
