The Bottom Line:
This is a top peforming projector. Don't be fooled by the low price. It's a great Home Theater unit and does 16:9 well!
The Sharp xr-32x projector is not well known as a home theater product. While listed as a 4:3 native screen format, it does a 16:9 format as well and in this capacity it is a stunningly beautiful HD quality home theater projector that outperforms projectors in it's class and even some that are much more expensive.
Because it is not marketed as a home theater product, some dealers might try and recommend other prooducts in it's place as being a better choice. On very large Projector dealer online suggested to me it would not be one of his choices and because of the 4:3 "boxy" screen native format. While true it is a 4:3, it also does 16:9 and it looks better than both a Sony model and Epson model I compared it to. The image is razor sharp, the contrast is incredible and the brightness is almost overwhelming. This projector is rated at about 4000 hours bulb life in the quiet/economy mode and you will find it is more than bright enough in this economy mode. My original concept was to blacken my picture window and side windows in my dark plum painted media room, but after seeing the daylight performance of this unit I am forgetting the special light blocking blinds in favor of the stock blinds already in the room. I"m simply going t add window tint, 35% to the single picture window and three stock windows, it's more than enough darkening for this powerful projector. We were able to enjoy daytime performance even with two 60 watt table lamps while watching some HD NFL footage on the NFL channel.
If you are considering a home projector, do not write this unit off your list. It uses DLP's newer 5 color wheel and it does an amazing job on every video signal I tested with. I saw no banding or "rainbows" and I just have to say the unit is amazing. This does not act like a $600.00 projector (street prices).
