Inexpensive, Compact, Decent Quality, For Motorcycling

byambrld Apr 14, 2006
Pros Compact, good build and quality image, low price.
Cons None. For my use these binoculars are everything I wanted and expected.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  These binoculars provide decent image quality in a compact, inexpensive package.
As a motorcyclist who enjoys taking the road less traveled, I prefer riding to places with more trees than people. I'm into scenery, not scenes. I discovered long ago that I can stand on some scenic overlook scanning the distant view with a pair of binoculars while many other people come take a quick look and move on. I think it might have to do with my male tendency to want to see what's over the next hill. Or maybe it's some kind of vicarious experience. I don't know, all I know is I enjoy it.

When it comes to the gear I carry when motorcycling I favor those items of compact design, decent quality and low price. Why? Because packing space on a motorcycle is limited so things I carry need to be compact. Also I expect the things I carry on my motorcycling adventures are more likely to be lost, stolen or damaged by the very nature of the mode of transport. Why risk an item with a higher dollar value than is needed to perform the task required?

When I started looking for a pair of binoculars I kept these three requirements (compactness, decent quality and low price) in mind. I also wanted as much magnification as possible while keeping within the framework of the above listed three criteria.

Once I had decided the size, price, quality and magnification I wanted it was simply a matter of choosing the manufacturer. Easy right? Except that it seems that everyone and their brother manufactures compact, decent quality, inexpensive binoculars. So how to choose? In the end I did a lot of reading, much of it here on Epinions, and compared prices and vendors. I ultimately chose the Simmons 801159.

The Simmons 801159 binoculars are 10X25 binoculars with a 288 foot field of view at 1000 yards. The 10 in 10X25 means, when you look through the binoculars, the object you see will appear 10 times larger than it would if you looked at it without the binoculars, the 25 is the diameter of the objective (front) lens of the binoculars in millimeters. The 801159's have a rubberized coating for better gripping. The eye tubes fold under the focusing wheel mount for more compact storage. There is an integrated neck string, fold down rubber eye cups for use with eye glasses and diopter adjustment to allow for differences in vision between a person's eyes. A storage pouch with a belt loop and lens cleaning cloth is included.

These binoculars work well for me and satisfy my three previously listed criteria quite well (compactness, decent quality and low price). They are compact enough to easily fit into my motorcycle's saddlebags or my seat bags. I can even carry them in my motorcycle jacket pockets. The image quality is up to the standards I'd expect in binoculars in this price range. I find the diopter adjustment as easy as with any other binoculars I've used. Since these are 10 power binoculars they are a bit more difficult to hold steady than less powerful binoculars but I'm able to steady them well enough for my purposes which is for viewing scenery. If your hands are not very steady you might want to consider binoculars of lower magnification.

My greatest concern when choosing low priced, compact binoculars was I might end up with a pair that had an unacceptable level of image distortion and poor build quality. I'm pleased to say that neither concern materialized with these Simmons 801159 binoculars. I'm well pleased with them.
