The Bottom Line:
If you're tired of local radio choices (or lack there of) and/or want out of market sports coverage, Sirius is awesome.
I just bought the Sportster 2 days ago, so not a lot of time to see any problems yet. I purchased it as Radio Shack and Sirius seems to have some price controls in place and there are no deals to found. I compared the Starmate, Sportster and Sportster Replay. I liked the features of the Sportster but couldn't justify the extra $$ for the Replay - I mean come on, how often have you really needed/wanted to pause radio? TV perhaps, but not radio. Biggest thing I liked about the Sportster over the Starmate was that I can program favorite songs/groups as well as NFL and NHL teams and they come on, the receiver tells me and I can jump right to it.
Anyway, purchased the Sportster Car Kit which included:
- Sportster receiver
- Remote control and battery
- Docking station
- Magnetic Antenna with cord
- DC power adapter
- "Permanent" mounting arm
I also purchased a 2nd car kit as I want to share the receiver between 2 vehicles. One thing that is interesting is that the 2nd car kit comes with a suction cup mount for window mounting. This kit that came bundled with the receiver is an adhesive and screw mount kit that you can't move from one vehicle to another.
I opted to self install and it's really not that bad. Biggest pain here is running the antenna cable from where ever you place the antenna to where the dock will be placed. On my Miata, this took a lot of work to get the cable run and I still have 3 or 4 feet of loose cable that connects to the dock. In my F-250, cable run was a lot easier and there is maybe 10 inches of exposed cable (mounted the permanent adapter under the dash). Without totally tearing out the dash or drilling holes, leaving some exposed cable is a necessary evil. So, if you can live with this and don't mind 20-90 minutes (Miata was 90, F-250 was 20) of effort, I'd recommend self install.
Once I got cables run, everything worked perfectly. Activation of the service was a piece of cake - note that you save $ if you activate on-line vs. calling them. Within minutes of activation, I was listening to music.
Cost per month varies depending on length of contract you choose. However, they are running a life time deal for $500 - of course you gambling that Sirius will be around for at least 3-4 more years.
