Out of 3 SPX8 frames, 2 worked well.
Pros
Great image, wood frame, well laid out menus, settings and albums.
Cons
Factory flaws. Can't flip a photo or view just one out of slide show sequence.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I would recommend this digital photo frame especially for it's image quality and large storage capacity.
We bought 3 of these frames as Christmas presents from Costco. I chose this frame for it's feature set. The screen resolution (800 X 600) as well as the on board
256 MB memory is superior to most other frames. We uploaded about 700 photos in 2 of the frames with lots of memory left. We dragged the images into a flash drive from my laptop, plugged the flash drive into the frame and then the photos were resized automatically.
The manual states uploading the images by memory card or flash drive is the only way the photos are optimized for the frames screen. Photos can also be transferred from computer to frame by means of a USB cable and SyncPix software but the manual states the photos will not be optimized this way, which I assume will use more memory and as stated in Smartparts FAQ's can slow down the viewing process. Part of the optimization process is suppose to flip a portrait style photo upright. Usually this didn't work regardless whether transfer was from memory card or flash drive.
In one frame I added Christmas music downloaded from Walmart online music. It played fine and made a nice touch for our family get together. Unfortunately after the MP3 went on, the slide show still played, but the transitions stopped working until I removed the music later. After that I updated the firmware on 2 of the frames but did not try any more MP3's uploads at that point to see if there was a correction. I did notice with the new firmware the transitions were much smoother and nicer to look at.
The third frame which I returned to Costco had a bad pixel plus the new version firmware wouldn't update on it.
I thought the screen image with the SPX8 was very crisp and bright compared to others I've seen in stores and the wood frame is a nice touch over the plastic ones on most digital frames. Configuration and settings was easy and well laid out with the menus and it all can be done either with the remote or buttons on the back of the frame.
It looks like this month Smartparts is coming out with a 12 inch frame with a similar feature set, depending on the price this might be the one I get for myself.
