Everything I expected

byjimrin Jul 30, 2002
Pros Network capability, play/while recording option, up to 320 hours
Cons Timely setup (due to original wrong selection of channels)
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Best DVR because of network capabilities and high capacity. Can't wait to get my second one.
I got my RTV4508 about a week ago, and it has been everything I expected and more. I am sure many DVRs have similar capabilities, like selecting to record from channel guide (no more entering starting and stopping times), playing a recorded show while recording another show, automatic commercial skip (how does it know what is a commercial??), and so forth. I would say that the biggest advantage of ReplayTV is its large capacity, up to 320 hours (my model holds up to 80 hours) on its top model and network connectivity (share with another machine in your house or better yet with friends and family, as well as download new schedules through your high speed home network than your phone line). Also, I heard TiVo will automatically add shows to record, so I am glad with ReplayTV, you have complete control over what is recorded. Also, I don't know if the other DVRs have this, but the "IR blaster" makes it so that it can control my digital cable box. The only problem I had was when I was setting it up, I selected the wrong cable company and it gave me the wrong TV schedule. It took a while to figure out how to fix the situation. Note: Below price does not include one-time $250 set up fee. However, there is no monthly fee with ReplayTV, so if you keep your device over 2 years, you'll end up saving money over those with monthly fees.
