The Bottom Line:  The feature rich ReplayTV will change the way you, and whoever has control of the remote, watches TV. My best entertainment purchase in years.
I record a lot of television shows, why? because that's what I do. Over the years I have managed to build a large library of old shows and movies. The downside is I have managed to build a large library of old shows and movies, which require a large amount of space for tapes. I decided to look at the tapeless ReplayTV Digital Video Recorder (DVR). The ReplayTV was first on my list because of the ability to Network and, with the aid of free third-party applications, push shows to my home computer.

Setup was extremely easy and the unit looked good with my home entertainment system. I connected my ReplayTV 4508 using broadband internet (it can connect via phone-line also) and downloaded the daily Replay television guide information. The guide information is provided as a pay service; monthly approximately $10.00 or a lifetime subscription of roughly $250.00. Replay offers 10 days of free service before a subscription is required.

Flash Forward

I have now been using ReplayTV for over a month and it has changed the way I watch and record television. I have found the most useful feature to be the ability to pause live TV. I no longer have to watch around phone calls, the need for snacks, or nature. I can walk away for hours (if enough hard drive space is available) and come back to where I left off. Honorable mention: commercial skip, 30 second forward skip, rewind/review.

I also push saved shows to my home computer to free-up disk space on the ReplayTV. And when I want to watch the shows I can use a free third-party application to stream the shows back to the replay. Finally, I can share shows with other ReplayTV owners through broadband internet.

If you are a person who changes channels every three to four seconds the ReplayTV, may not be for you. Channel changing is slow through most cable boxes; it can sometimes take up to 6 seconds for a channel change. Hopefully, this is an issue that Sonic Blue will fix with future firmware upgrades. However, the ability to bypass ReplayTV and just use the cable box is a push of a button on the remote.

The feature rich ReplayTV will change the way you, and whoever has control of the remote, watches TV. This has been my best entertainment purchase in years, even better than the Spinal Tap DVD.
