Unreliable product, company is on the skids

Pros ID3 tagging, nice buttons, good sound
Cons eats batteries, skips in a car, FAILS COMPLETELY!
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Don't buy it or it's relatives. Most any player out there will outlast it.
When I was shopping for an MP3 CD player, I did my homework and learned that I wanted a reliable player with long battery life, skip protection and easy navigation features. Navigation and display especially are critical with MP3 players because it is more like a small computer and you have to choose music to play from a long list of songs.

The Riovolt SP90 was well rated for it's ID3 song tag display (important feature) and easy navigability.
It was also rated for long battery life and anti skip protection.

Well, I got one and it worked, though not in my car (too bumpy). No power adapter is included and it did eat through batteries every 3-4 hours, so I got a radio shack power adapter. It would not work with that, kept skipping and shutting down, so I went back to batteries, got some rechargables and resigned myself to changing them often.

I did appreciate the ID3 tag and display and was happy enough with it for a while.

But now, 7 months after I bought it, it suddenly won't play. I keep getting "no disk" errors with any and every disk.

I went to their site, which is hard to find since the company has sold out to another. Part of their support system is still in place, the knowledge base, but the rest is offline.

I did eventually find a service and FAQ section on the new site, and one of the main questions is what to do when you get a "no disk" error. Aparently this is quite common! I tried all the obvious things (different disk, clean lens etc) to no avail, so I emailed them. They never responded.

Looking at epinions, one might think that I'm the only one that has had a problem, but go to Amazon to see a better and more current representation of Riovolt user experiences.

Personally, I won't buy it or any product from Riovolt, Sonic Blue, or their successors again. Less than one year of use is not acceptable. Selling out to another company is an act of bad faith to their customers in my opinion.

It's a cheap design with cheap components. Most anything else you buy, from the $30 no-name at WalMart on up will outlast this unit.
