Great for travel
Pros
Delivers promise: access your tv content while travelling Good battery. Picture quality acceptable.
Cons
mail tool sucks not a computer; no flexibilty web browser limited bad wireless range
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Would purchase again; If you want "your local" news, sports, tivo, ... this is great.
Despite the picture epinions shows this is not what the lx5 looks like, also no remote.
I bought the lx5 because of size. @ 1 pound this seemed reasonable for travel.
I want to watch my local tv (sports teams) and recorded tivo shows while travelling.
The setup is easy and the built in 802.11a/b/g works great, I've used it at the office,
hotel, airport hot spot, and home with no problems.
The built in remote codes were impressive, I easily setup my tivo and sattelite.
The built in mail tool sucks because you either pull the mail off the server or get duplicates,
even my phone can figure out which mail has already been copied. I hope an update is
forthcoming because without a real physical keyboard this would never become my mail
tool device.
The browser is pretty good, but advanced things like web games requiring activex don't
work. Basic stuff works including my work webmail and my private ms exchange via
browser. Actually I am doing this review with the LX5 from my bedroom.
The biggest suprise is the limited range of the base unit. Unless I'm in the same room or next room
the signal is lost; this could be due my 2.4ghz phone or 802.11 network but for wireless tv this seems
unreasonable. In my house I end up connecting to the base unit via the travel feature (netAV)
by connecting to my wireless home network and routing to the base unit via my home lan.
Picture quality while connected to the built in wireless or on a LAN is very good; picture quality
while on the road is reasonable and I can easily watch an action movie without discomfort; sort
of like high bandwidth streaming picture quality.
Picture viewer is nice and so is the compact flash slot (sony without mem stick?); the lx1
has only mem stick I believe. I think it can play mpeg1 but have not tried yet.
Battery life is very good can easily last 3-4 hours.
Overall I am happy with my puchase but the price is quite high and like all electronics something
around the corner will be better or cheaper.
