Great CD Player - but perhaps too high of a price?
Pros
Great sound quality, solid construction, ES-quality
Cons
expensive, remote could be better
Recommended it?
Yes
I purchased my CDP-CA9ES about two years ago, and just like other ES products in the Sony line, this CD player is made with top-notch craftsmanship and high-quality materials. The CD player is solid, and the sound it produces is some of the best I've heard from a CD player (and don't let anyone fool you into believing that "all CD players sound the same, umm ..., because they are digital!" - which is a big lie).
When I was shopping around for a CD player, I was looking at some pretty nice units, most of which had the capacity for many more discs than the CA9ES - which lies at the heart of the problem with this CD player: it is not the best value.
I paid about $600 for this CD player - which is quite a sum for a 5 disc changer. There are single-disc players out there in the four figures, but that notwithstanding, $600 for a 5-disc is pretty high. On top of that, the remote is not the greatest in the world either.
So, overall, this CD player is great, the sound is phenomenal, and its backed by Sony's 5-year ES warranty (the best out of the companies I've seen so far). But, if you are cost conscious, or want more discs, then I suggest you look elsewhere. The 5-disc is a great unit to put directly in your entertainment system, while relegating your 300-disc into some corner of the room for playing discs continuously at parties.
My final peeve applies not just to this unit, but to all the CD players I've seen so far: the quality of CD text and disc titling. The CA9ES, like most high-end CD players, gives you the ability to add titles to your CDs, organize them, etc. But, they don't give you the ability to add titles to tracks, or to give titles more than a small number of characters (like 8 or 10 or 12). Fixing this feature will greatly benefit the utility of CD players, as even for CDs that I own, often I don't know what track is what.
