Review of Sony CDP-CX210 Multi-CD Player (March 19, 2001)

I remember back about ten years ago I bought my first CD player. It was a Sony five disk carousel multi-disk player. Back then, I had collected a large volume of LP records and I couldn't imagine ever doing the same with CD's. I figured that if I even bought five CD's, that would be a lot. I merely bought so I could tape my friends' CD's. But, that was ten years ago.

Now, I own an even larger volume of CDs that would make a lot of small music shops envious! I soon outgrew my Sony five disk multi-disk player and, about two years ago; I upgraded to the CDP-CX210 two hundred CD multi-player. When I was in the store buying this player, I compared it to the slightly higher priced model that allows you to store the name of the song playing in the CD player's memory. When I asked the salesman for a demonstration, he fumbled through the process and eventually entered a title into the display. Bah! Who needs it! It was a hell of a lot of work to perform. I settled for the CDP-CX210 model.

I took the CD player home and began loading it up with CD's. It took me about five hours to complete this task alone. When finished, I was amazed to find out I had exactly 200 CDs in my collection! The CD player came with two 100-volume vinyl CD cover books, where you can store the CD covers for the CDs you put in the CD player. This was a very helpful feature, and I often refer to the books to find certain CDs to play.

I love Sony's electronics. They seem to offer a little bit more sophisticated products than their competitors, which puts them a step ahead of the competition. However, I also find they tend to add a lot of "bells and whistles" - or features that seem cool at first, but once you own the product, you never use them any way. I tend to enjoy simple products that save me work and operate, as they should.

This product is very good. A CD salesman once told me that these 200 CD players would destroy my CDs. He obviously did not know what he was talking about. I have never had any problems with CDs getting jammed, or malfunctioning inside the CD player. The only problem I seem to experience with this CD player is if a CD has a scratch on it (VERY rare in my collection), and you have the volume turned up loud; the CD's will sometimes skip. Early on, this scared the hell out of me. Then I realized it was because the CD player was located on the same furniture as one of my speakers. I moved the speaker, and haven't had the problem since. Another more annoying problem is that during random play, the CD player seems to always select from the same group of CDs, leaving other CDs unplayed. This has nothing to do with block selections, because I did not set up blocks, nor are they in the block mode when I press the shuffle key on the CD player.

Operation of the unit is easy! Simply turn the power to your receiver on, turn on the power to the CD player, and select either a CD from the CD bank using a rotating dial, or pick shuffle for random selections from your collection. You may select a block of CDs to choose from (if you set up your selections that way), or select a single CD.

One thing I found to be missing from this CD player that is available on most other CD players is the fast forward key. Likewise, the fast rewind key is also missing. If you want to play a piece of a song, you can not do it with this CD player. You can, however, skip songs on a CD.

Once full of CDs, the unit is very heavy (about 60 pounds?). It does have an attractive black finish, and blends in well with other stereo products. It is a bit noisy when the carousel is rotating, but this is not a big problem. Loading an unloading CDs is fairly simple to do; however, sometimes the access door gets stuck. If you have big fingers, it might also be a bit difficult to grip a CD to remove it, if the unit is full of CDs.

Sony has come out with newer models of multi-disk CD players. I was in need of another one, since I have a lot more CDs, so I considered getting another Sony. One advantage to getting another Sony is that you can interconnect all Sony components together. However, when I went to my local electronics store, I decided to get a 300-disk CD player from Pioneer (this will be the subject of another review). The Sony units were simply too expensive, and did not really offer much more in terms of features over the years.

I would highly recommend the Sony CD players, especially the CDP-CX210. It is a high quality player, and delivers excellent sound. It is easy to use and maintain. I would recommend buying it on sale or for under $200, as I paid about $175 for mine two years ago. Important differences in models have not changed much over the past few years, so don't look for anything spectacular in new models. Good luck, and thank you for reading my review!
