CDP-CX455: Promises, Promises
Pros
Sony name, availability at major retailers
Cons
Spotty reputation and quality, in light of recent experiences
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
"Sony Quality" is beginning to sound like an oxymoron. Fooled me once, shame on you, fooled me twice, shame on me. I expect a sealed box to contain perfect product.
My search for a CD changer took me to many retailers. Radio Shack had a house-brand that looked a lot like a Pioneer. Circuit City had Sony, and a CX-355 out-of-box special that caught my eye. A week later, it was skipping, badly. Back to the store.
I came home with the CDP-CX455. My CDs are all (currently) playing flawlessly, with perhaps a few more fingerprints on them. You see, the only way you can handle the CD is by gripping the sides. I thought I could place my finger on the top edge and roll it in and out of the changer; if there was an additional 1/4 inch of clearance I could do so.....And I have slender fingers!
I have no need for 400 discs, but if you want MP3 compatibility, you need this model. Sony does caution that not all MP3s will be played well.
What about that nifty keyboard port, to allow memo entry? Well, uh, it worked perfectly on the 355, but not on the 455. On the 455, the CapsLock light never comes on, and the keyboard defaults to CapsLock every single time you access it. Also, the cursor is sluggish. I had much better feelings about the keyboard interface on the CDP-CX355.
But Hey! That's not a problem! Sony is currently offering a rebate in the form of a FREE KEYBOARD! Ya think the "free" keyboard compensates for the flaw? My guess is it does. I am not waiting 8 weeks to find out, however.
You know what? Mine is going back tomorrow.
I wouldn't be so turned off, if it weren't for the fact that other reviews on Sony CD changers have also mentioned failures and shortcomings.
