The Bottom Line:
A great unit if you are on a budget and want something that is easy to use and won't get you frustrated!
Well i will state something first... i have the Australian equivalent of this unit... now that is out of the way!
I bought this unit back in March 2002, so almost a year ago now.
Price: I got this for $350AUS, so around $175US. I was on a budget and this was the best unit in my budget that I could find at the time. I was new to car audio at the time and SONY being the huge consumer brand that it is, jumped to the front of the car.
Looks: This was one of the things that jumped at my, it has a "brushed aluminium" look to it. My unit has the orange lcd rather than the green pictured above. It really is a good looking unit.
Installation: Was easy. Nothing out of the ordinary and worked first go. The wiring diagram was easy to follow, and there were mounting brackets included.
Features: I wish that there was a graphic equaliser!!! The features are very easy to access, but the lack of a graphic equaliser meant that i had to just adjust the sound via treble and bass which meant I can't get it to my taste perfectly.
I would also REALLY like a 2nd pre-out. As this would mean I could have another amp for the front stage and not have to worry about losing fading ability.
Sound quality seems rather good. The internal amp puts out enough power to make my 5 1/4in front coax speakers go nicely.
Conclusion: A great unit if you are on a budget and want something that is easy to use and won't get you frustrated!
However, I do think there are better options in the market for maybe a fraction more!
