The Bottom Line:
Do not purchase this head unit, because it will break in short order.
I had bounced around through the various brands of the car audio world as I was growing up, and was fairly confident that I didn't like Sony. However, after I got my latest car, I was doing a lot of research and kept being drawn to the CDX-M850MP. It had all the features I wanted, and wasn't it pretty. It was a little pricey ($250) relative to other mainstream units, but I thought hey, it's worth it to get a quality HU.
That's where the love-affair with the 850 came to an end. Immediately after receipt and installation, the preset radio stations didn't work. They could be used with the factory presets, but you could not change the station settings. After a short period, I could not use the preset buttons at all regardless.
I sent in the unit for warranty work, I had to pay shipping for which I thought was unfair. I received the unit back, and had it reinstalled. It seemed to work fine.
That was about 6 months ago, and now all the buttons are sporadically working, and occasionally swapping functions. For example, sometimes I will go to press the volume down, and it will turn off the player, or perhaps change source. It also has started having trouble reading discs. I am really tired of dealing with this HU, and wish I'd never bought it in the first place. I've had good luck with JVC, Kenwood, and Blaupunkt, which are not necessarily high dollar pieces, and then I pay a little more and get a little less. Do yourself a favor and walk away from this HU.
