The poor man's quality MP3 player
Pros
Cheap, plays mp3s
Cons
Absolute crap display, Titles scroll once, ugly
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
DON'T pay more than $130. I wouldn't recommend it unless you were short on cash. If not, then treat yourself to a better player, it's worth it.
I'm just going to get down to it.
Sound
I have 4 rockford 100w speakers, with a infinity 200 watt powered sub in my car. Since I had a decent cd player before, The Kenwood Kdc8017, I can make a pretty good comparison. The Kenwood player cranked out 47 watts per speaker while the Sony one claims to crank out 5 watts. The sound is "OKAY," in other words, the player doesn't blow my mind, however I don't have any complaints. What annoys me a great deal, is that when you turn the volume up or down, there is no numerical value shown. Instead, you see the following /\/\/\/\/\/ with each slash or backslash representing a unit of volume. It's pretty lame if you ask me.
The DSO thing is basically a feature that supposedly adjusts the height of the sound. For most people their front speakers are on the bottom of their doors. There three different levels of DSO allows you to change where the speakers seem to be. Cool feature, but on my SUV it just seems like the treble is turned up. Once again, doesn't blow my mind. Also, there isn't a loud button, or a power bass button, so that's pretty annoying whenever you want to pump up your bass for a certain track.
Display
Ok this is pretty damn lame. My sister bought a pioneer mp3 player has has beautiful animations of dolphins, cars, and other stuff for $230. The screen is basically a calculator! So even the names of songs, time of tracks, basically look like you inputed it into a scientific calculator.
The song titles only scroll once and then stop. That's pretty freaking lame too. SO basically you have to press display a bunch of times to get it to rescroll again.
Remote
This thing just pretty much sucked. My old remote for my Kenwood player allowed me to control it from almost any angle. Many times, I'm pushing the damn remote straight in front of the player and still nothing happens!
Price
Ok I paid about $130 and I feel that I got pretty much what I paid for. Circuit City and Best Buy sell this unit for $200! That's a rip-off. Anything above what I paid, and you basically paid too much.
Mp3 Playback
This is "OKAY" too. It still has a loading time which is pretty damn annoying compared to many other players out there. Since this is a 2003 model, it would be nice to have WMA playback, but then again, for $130 that's just asking for a little too much.
A little more info about the MP3s, there is no direct jump to the song. You have to go through the entire cd, however you can jump through folders. By this, I'm saying that you can put all your rock songs in one folder, and all your rap songs in another and be able to jump to the folder containing just rock or just rap so you can get to the song you want to listen to more quickly.
Looks
Ok, this is really subjective, I know, but personally, I think it's a really ugly player. It has a big blue screen in the center with red buttons all over it. The fact that the face looks like a calculator makes it look cheap. A convenient thing though, is that when you are putting in or taking out a cd, there is a light right above the slot where you stick it in, thus no need to search for the opening in the dark.
The faceplate itself is removable, but that's almost expected nowadays. Too bad it doesn't turn around 180 degrees like some other players so you can just hide it.
