A great buy

Pros Fantastic
Cons Bit difficult to work out a few functions, instructions not great.
Recommended it? Yes
One thing I should say initially is that my system is very slightly different from the model quoted here. In almost every respect identical, it has two tape-decks at the top, where this has one. This is the only real difference. In other ways - speakers, appearance, lay-out and size, it is the same.

I live in a fairly small flat, and wanted a system with good audio quality, that wasn't too large. The Sony looked good.

I like almost everything about this model. The price, for a start, is impressively low for what you actually get. I particularly like the appearance of it also. It isn't particularly large, and is much more attractive than many systems. The silver colour is better, for me at least, than a heavy matt black. The buttons are easy to use, and I like the large volume dial.

The layout is easy to use. The double tape-deck is at the top, and the eject buttons are on the top surface of the system. In the middle are the rest of the tape buttons, the volume and power knobs, and the mode selection buttons (CD, radio, tape, etc), and the radio controls. At the bottom is the CD player, and the controls for that. I do have one quibble, though. The methods you need to use to do some things, such as set the clock or the radio alarm, and to record from CD to tape, are not obvious or simple. The instruction booklet doesn't help much here, and the explanations of how to do these things aren't very helpful! Once you have mastered them, however, the sound is so good it's almost worth it.

The radio, which has a long wire ariel to trail above, is good. The radio reception is not generally good where I live, but is perfect on this system. The CD player has a random mode button, can be programmed to play tracks in the order you want to hear them, and there is a useful synchronisation button on the B tape player, if you want to record stuff from CD to tape.

The speakers have good long connection wires, and can therefore be placed at some distance from the main unit. I have my system at the bottom of a set of 8 foot high bookshelves, and the speakers on the top. The system comes with a remote control, which is useful. I like the remote control - it is small and handy, and well-laid out. It doesn't suit everyone, however, because it's small. My mother and grandmother, in their early 50s and late 80s respectively, found it irritating when they were staying with me. The buttons and labels being small, they both had to find their glasses and peer at the remote to use it.

The audio quality is very good, in my opinion, especially considering the small size of the speakers. I am very pleased with this system, and don't hesitate in recommending it.
