The Bottom Line:
I would recommend the Sony CMT-CP1 to anyone looking for an extremely stylish, compact, and great-sounding stereo!
I bought this micro system stereo over two years ago now, and have been nothing but thrilled with it. I have not had any problems, and it is still as good as the day I bought it!
The main reason I bought it was for the terrific, crisp and clear sound quality. Volume was not really an issue because this type of stereo is designed for bedrooms or compact spaces, and not to fill a house with booming music! With this in mind it fulfills its purpose exceedingly well. The volume is loud enough to fill a room, and the sound quality remains undistorted, clear, and dynamically balanced up to a very loud volume.
There is unfortunately no separate bass and treble controls, but it doesn't really matter because the sound is optimised by what Sony calls its "Dynamic Sound Generator", or DSG. This accentuates the bass and treble ranges to provide a great sound whatever the style of music.
Of course, a major consideration with any stereo purchase is the aesthetics - does it look good? In this area, the Sony is one of the best there is in this price range. The brushed aluminium finish and wood speaker boxes provide such a classy appearance with a hint of retro style, and the orange lighting and button illumination further adds to the great eye-catching looks. The shiny chrome volume knob is a masterstroke, and the "dual mode transparent display" is a fantastic piece of work! Usually glowing bright orange, the display becomes semi-transparent when the stereo is on standby, or when a tape is being used. This enables the information on the screen to still be readable, but lets you see through the window into the tape compartment!
Its features are numerous and are all you need in a compact stereo. It is very easy to use, with all controls being very intuitive. Many functions can only be accessed through the remote however, which may cause concerns if you are a person likely to misplace the remote! Many functions are one-touch, e.g. you can just press play on the CD player to instantly start playing a CD even if the stereo is off or using another function.
The CD-to-tape recording feature is also very good on this stereo - it has a button called CD SYNC which automatically copies a CD onto tape, automatically restarting a track if the tape reaches the end of one side. Auto-reverse is of course standard, and the stereo even allows seven seconds of blank tape to run before beginning recording - to bypass the unrecordable leader tape! Dolby B noise reduction is also standard.
There is also a two stereo RCA inputs and one stereo output on the back of the stereo, allowing for connecting multiple devices to the stereo, such as a minidisc player. In fact, about the only feature missing from the stereo is an inbuilt minidisc player/recorder, which would inevitably add a great deal to the price anyway! This stereo DOES have optical digital output however, meaning easy and perfect recording to a connected minidisc recorder.
All in all, a terrific stereo which looks great, performs well, and is easy to use. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a stereo that will fill these needs.
