Microsystem, Maxisound!

Pros Nice styling, great sound! CD-Text is great.
Cons MiniDisc name editing becomes tedious.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I'd buy this unit again given the chance. It's small, stylish, easy to use and has a fantastic sound!
Originally I set out to buy a mid-range, low-cost microsystem due to my constricted budget. I originally had my sights set on the Sony CMT-CP11, small, sleek and sexy in looks and fantastic in it's sound. Checking the prices in all the stores I came across the Sony CMT-CP33MD. I instantly fell in love with it. It was small, stylish and in the store it sounded fantastic. It had the added bonus of being a MiniDisc player/recorder.

Despite being a little more expensive than the CMT-CP11 I decided to take the plunge. Setting up the Sony CMT-CP33MD was a simple affair, it took less than 5 minutes and I didn't even have to check the instructions (which come in many languages). I put in my favourite CD and laid back to check out the sound. Superb. It filled my room totally on less than half volume. The excellent little 30W speakers delivered a really crisp sound without distortion even on the highest volume setting.

I move closer to check the display and to my delight I found that it was displaying the track name of my CD. CD-Text is a new feature to me, but it certainly makes things very easy with enabled CDs. I decided to check out the MiniDisc recorder, also a new thing to me. Having never used one before I was a little unsure of what to do but both the intuitive menu system and the excellent manual soon had me recording my favorite tracks onto MiniDisc.

The MiniDisc is capable of recording from any of the various sources, whether it's the CD player, the Tape-Deck, the FM/AM Radio or the Video/Aux input source (selected by the "Function" button). It has the feature of recognising silences between songs and automatically separating the tracks on the MiniDisc. Excellent!

I've been using the system for a couple of weeks now and I am almost totally satisfied, the only real gripe I have is the inevitable time when it comes to storing the track names on the MiniDiscs. It's a real pain to scroll through the individual letters (upper or lower case), numbers and symbols to get the desired name. I often find it so painstaking that I abbreviate the name which looks a little tacky. Maybe a few letters on the number keys on the remote would help this, like the style of a Mobile phone.
