In the process of simplifying my life, I decided to get rid of my 12-year old component stereo system and replace it with a compact system, and also integrate it into my computer/TV setup. The Sony CMT-EX1 compact "executive stereo system" is the Macintosh of the audio world - it is compact, easy to understand and use, and just looks great anywhere. The wooden trim feels right at home for most decors. The vertical loading mechanism is what attracted me to the unit in the first place. Only after using it for a few weeks did I realize how clean the controls are, from the touch sensitive CD eject button to the spartan controls, backlit with a blue light. The audio quality is very good - the speakers are 2-way, with no support of a woofer (although they make a lame attempt by drilling a hole at the bottom of the speaker case). At 15x2 watts, don't expect to use this for a house party. The CMT-EX1 has three modes - CD, tuner (AM/FM), and "tape", meaning it will use the RCA audio in/out jacks at the back. It also has a digital audio output for MiniDisk recorders. The remote control is a bit unergonomic and confusing - some functions are only accessible via the remote, so don't lose it. The player has the ability to play CDR/CDRW disks, but only in standard Audio CD format. It integrates well with my computer, replacing the cheap and tinny "multimedia" speakers with a pair of speakers with a wider dynamic range and less distortion at high volumes. If you were to buy on technical specifications alone, this unit should be worth about $200. Expect to pay an extra $100 for the style, looks, and the Sony brand. This unit is highly recommended for those who don't need a lot of power, who have little space on their bookshelf or desk, and who place some value on style. For those who want a bit more features or a different styling, Sony also sells the more expensive CMT-EX22, which has a better remote.
