Pros
Competent sound from all sources at moderate volume levels. Decent picture quality. All-in-one solution.
Cons
Detail playing CDs seems variable. Not a floor shaker. DVD is not multi-region.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
A domestic-friendly system that performs well both in audio and visual departments, at a reasonable price. This all-in-one solution works. Recommended.
I bought this system because I have a fairly small lounge and needed a domestic-friendly system. In the event, my CMT-M90DVD and its speakers are all bracketed to the wall, as is the accompanying Samsung Plasma TV. Before we go on, some points which are truly inexpensive but important:
1. I have a Panasonic digital TV box with proper audio outputs plugged into the Sony.
2. I have invested a little in buying Thor/Monster shielded interconnects throughout - this will add about 75 to the total DVD/TV price. No need to go crazy on this, but you will notice a difference to free connectors.
3. Speaker placement is symmetrical each side of the TV, and not in a room corner.
If you are looking for a floor shaking AV system, this is not for you.
If you are looking for an AV system which delivers competent sound from DVDs and TV sources, and CD and radio too, then read on.
This system appears to make something of the theoretical all-in-one advantages of component matching and short signal paths. In a small room the sound has detail and balance and - within a moderate, apartment-appropriate volume range - some dynamic range. My room was bright but if you keep it symmetrical e.g. bass +1 treble -1 you can end up neutral (however avoid the DSG 'enhancement'). The fact there are just two speakers confirms the musical intent of this DVD system (although it never quite produces the X factor which tingles the skin). I would rate the sound quality as 3.25 out of 5 in absolute terms i.e. above average.
The S-video output into the Plasma TV gives good results, using a decent shielded cable of course.
Detail retrieval on CDs can sometimes be iffy, but you can always enjoy the music.
In summary, if you need a room friendly system and don't want to shake the rafters, you can do a lot worse than this nifty Sony system.
Awarded four stars because it does the job it was designed to do, fulfilling all departments without missing a step, at a reasonable price.
