Great little pocket cam - within limits

Pros size, optics, ergonomics
Cons price, menus, lens vulnerability, zoom
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  You've got to look at why you want the camera - for candids, family photos, etc. - a winner.
Saw a colleague with this little (and little is the operative word here) jewel and immediately fell in love. I was replacing a Nikon CoolPix 990, and wanted a few more megapixels, and also something small to deal with. Sony is a reliable producer. The optics were very good. The price was a bit up there, but a sale at Best Buy and a coupon fixed that. I went for it.

What do I love about this camera? Size. Period. Fits easy in your pocket, and you can cart it anywhere, and come back with excellent high-res photos. I'm a radiologist, and I deal with images everyday. I've also been a long-term hobby photographer as well. I think I have some idea about what a good picture is. Well, this camera can't do much for how you frame a photo, but it will give you excellent digital photos, suitable for keeping on a CD, hard drive, making prints, or fooling around with. For those family pics you want to have, I haven't seen many better. Convenience rules.

This superb and very large back-of-camera LCD screen is as good as I've seen. Allows you to easily format pictures, and see them after exposing better than just about anything out there. I like the way it turns on with the slider that also protects the lens. I love the ergonomics of the camera - excellent hand-feel. Easy to understand buttons, and just the right amount of them. Nice little quick movie grabs. Battery life has been very good. The memory stick supplied is almost absurdly small - I picked up a 512 MB card which was much better. The USB link works nice, the little cradle is good, and convenient. I can't help but think it could be smaller.

Now, the limits. It isn't going to do spectacular panoramic landscapes. You're limited to a 3X optical zoom. Stick to working within a limited perspective. Okay, it can do some big-impact large view images, but they aren't what this camera seems to be about. I don't like the proximity of the lens to the front camera face - too many times with fingerprints on the lens already. Recess the stupid thing. No one seems to want to do this. The menu isn't the easiest, or most logical. Hard to work with a displayed image - unlike my Nikon, which was superb. You've got to read that book - CAREFULLY. I'd love more flexibility to work with the images - tiff or something else, please. Although, Sony went with the middle-of-the-road, common way to deal with things. I guess that makes some sense.

Price is of concern. You have to look for a deal to make it make sense, in the world of every-declining prices and ever-increasing megapixel counts.

Buy or not buy? Hey, I bought it. I wanted a convenient, high-resolution, big display camera. I got it.
