The Bottom Line:
The best of the best in this price range.
This is my fifth camera this month. I have been looking for a new camera for a while. I decided to purchase a Canon, as I have had decent luck with them in the past. It was a bit of a disappointment. I then tried another Canon, and was again unsatisfied. Next on the list was a Nikon. This was the worst of the lot. Then, I was swayed to Olympus, and that wasn't satisfying either. Finally, I did some more research and decided to pick up this Sony. The fifth choice was indeed the best!
I have historically favored Sony's designs, but they image quality has always been a bit off. Whether it was the slight blue hue or generally washed out looking photographs, there was always something to sway you in another direction. Fortunately, they have fixed most of these problems with this latest generation of cameras.
Image quality is outstanding in outdoor and indoor lighting. The camera is quite skilled at picking the right lighting modes, etc. Still, there is great control in manual mode, which some other cameras in this price range lack.
In video mode, Sony has incorporated a zoom feature. This makes this camera superior in video shooting. Video is clear and crisp, maintaining great detail in the 720p quality mode.
The flash on this camera is extremely powerful, besting every other camera in the class. It is powerful enough to fill a large room, and even fill rooms through doors, etc.
My only complaint is the camera's performance in low light without the flash active. These photos are littered with major noise, even with custom ISO settings active.
Battery life is good, considering the amount of work the camera is doing, and it provides several hundred images with the flash active.
Finally, this camera has a solid, attractive body, with a large, beautiful LCD. I feel confident in its ability to stand the test of time without falling apart.
Overall, I am impressed. I found the best camera in the class, even if it meant a number of trips to trade in cameras.
