The Bottom Line:
Either buy an extended warranty or don't buy from Sony.
I have owned a Sony DSC-H5 for a year and found today that it will no longer autofocus when I press the shutter button halfway down. I treat my camera equipment very carefully, so abuse is not the issue. After reading posts from other consumers who have experienced the same problem (http://www.photographyblog.com/index.php/weblog/comments/sony_dsc_h5_and_sony_dsc_h2/), I guess I'm in good company. I have avoided buying Sony equipment in the past (i.e. bought HD TV, digital camcorder, audio equipment, etc. from other vendors) but bought this camera because I found a great sale price and it had the features I wanted.

The camera produces good pictures and my entire family has enjoyed using it. But, a camera should function longer than this one has without requiring service.
I'm going to send it back for service - hopefully Sony will fix it so that it works for a long time (unlike quite a few other folks have experienced, per their postings on the web site listed above).
