The Bottom Line:
I would purchase from another manufacturer, I bet you can find a better model for the same price.
We returned it.
Obviously if you are reading here, you care about reviews, I bet for the money you can find a better camera.
I didn't think I knew much about cameras. I have the old Sony DSC-P52, made in Japan. I have always trusted Sony. Well my shutter broke on my P52, a $97 fix, but now you can purchase a camera for that price, so I chose not to have it fixed. I went to Sears and found the DSC-S700, nice and compact. Made in China, maybe not an issue. Since Sears only had one left, I had to purchase the floor model, which means it didn't come with any of the cables, or memory or anything the BOX model *may* have included. But since we owned another Sony digital camera and had the cable for it, we *thought* we would be fine, the old cable is a mini 5B, as most things are, a very easy cable to find. The cable for the Sony DSC S700 is NOT an easy find, do not lose your cable, you will NOT be able to find it at Best Buy, Sears, or many electronics stores. You CAN purchase the replacement from Sony, it's about $15, though the man who quoted me on the cable quoted me for the mini 5B, so had I bought it, it would have been the wrong cable, way to go Sony! To me this is another way Sony can keep money for themselves, rather than using a universal cable that you can purchase anywhere. But this isn't why I returned the camera, this is just an FYI.
Remember why I was purchasing a NEW camera? My old one had a damaged shutter, just from time and use, not from being dropped or any other reason. So I take my new handy dandy camera home, we don't have any memory for the camera so we can take 12 pictures.
The reason I took it back (keep in mind I know little about cameras):
1. My pictures were totally overexposed, way too bright, so I fiddled with the settings. Anything with white in the picture is REALLY white and bleeds onto other objects, even in white mode "snow." With my OLD camera I could mess with settings- I liked that. I didn't know what I was doing but I would mess with them until I liked what I took.
2. Well with THIS camera, there is ONLY one mode you can alter, heck you don't even have the option of turning on/off the flash in some modes. I am not a moron and anyone who owns a camera can figure out when they might want a flash. And if the flash messes up the picture you can always retake it without the flash-ah the benefit of no longer buying expensive film.
3. Also the ISO settings from 100-1000, again I don't know about these ISO settings, but I am willing to learn. After I took several pictures in every setting, yes I am willing to learn the hard way. We uploaded them into our computer and compared the photos from this camera and our old camera. Nearly every picture was extremely grainy, way too much noise. I have since learned a LOT more about ISO, and this camera is JUST grainy.
4. Focusing. Single area auto-focus, I just didn't like it.
5. The cover for the USB cable is a harder plastic, which felt like it would break quickly. The cover on my previous camera was a rubbery cover which held up to use.
6. THE SHUTTER! Holy heck you'd think they would have fixed this common problem. Yes, the shutter now is rubbery instead of hard plastic, but guess what, we owned this camera for 2 days and took maybe 50 pictures. The shutter wouldn't close all the way! So it went back to Sears!
(Oh yea we did end up getting a cable, it didn't come from Sony, we went back to Sears and they found one for us)
