Not Top-of-the-Line, but Okay

Pros Small, Compact, Lightweight, Multiple Settings, Inexpensive.
Cons No AC Adapter, Extremely Limited/Useless Internal Memory
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This camera takes good quality pictures. It's a good value. Expect to pay almost the same amount as the cost of the camera for batteries and a memory card.
I got the Sony Cybershot DSC-S700 as a gift this week. I was looking for a basic camera that I could use to take pictures on local outings and of the beautiful foliage we have in the northeast at this time of year. This camera boasts a 7.2 mega pixel, 3X optical zoom, 2.4 LCD monitor and High Sensitivity ISO 1000. It seemed like a fairly good value since the camera sells for about $149.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the box and took the camera out was how thin the camera was. Compared to other cameras I have owned, this was very small and compact. It also had a fairly large LCD screen which I think is good so that I can preview many of the pictures. The camera came with a USB cable for connecting it to your computer, and another cord that you use to connect the camera to the TV to preview pictures. However, the camera did not come with an AC adapter. This camera only uses batteries. This is something I think is a big flaw to the camera since batteries will only last a short time and you will have to constantly replace them. I purchased a set of recharchable batteries for about $20, but I did not appreciate the added expense. Also, the first time I took the camera out on a trip, I was only able to take 5 pictures before the internal memory was used up. This meant I needed to purchase a memory card which was another additional expense.

Some positive things about the camera are the many settings you can shoot images in. For example, there is a beach setting, a twighlght setting, a snow setting, a twighlight portrait setting, and an automatic setting. Each setting optimizes the picture quality for each environment. For example, if you are taking a ski trip, you would use the snow setting to take the best pictures. I tried this out with the twighlight setting at night, and found that the pictures came out okay, but they were just as good when I used the automatic setting.

Overall, this camera is good, but if I had to purchase again, I would choose one which was rechargeable with an AC adapter. I think the constant replacement of batteries will be the greatest flaw with the DSC-S700.
