Sony CD Walkman D-CJ01 MP3 Player
Pros
Good sound, good buffer, easy to operate.
Cons
LCD cracks very easily under normal use.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Caveat emptor. You take your chance with the warranty not being backed by this company if you buy a lemon.
At the urging of a reviewer to re-write this review and after calming down from my experience with Sony's customer service (more on that later), and a couple of product write-ups to see what people generally think as most helpful about these reviews I submit this edited version of my previous thoughts on this unit.
To be fair, I did an extensive amount of research for my daughter's birthday present, I didn't want to spend a small fortune for a CD/MP3 player, but I didn't want to go cheap and receive cheap. I was looking for something as compact as possible but still handled a standard Audio CD and was MP3 capable.
I found that with Sony's D-CJ01. The reviews I read were favorable and Sony comes with a very good reputation with Customer Service and innovative products, and, at USD$132, this seemed to be the right fit for what I was looking for.
This device is advertised at great for joggers which implies it can handle general bumps along side the user.
The buttons are small but easy to use; some have easily seen symbols while others have easy to read labels.
The LCD panel is easy to read but limited in size making navigation just a little tricky.
There is a nice feature to lock the lid so it doesn't accidentally pop open on you and cause your CD to self-destruct. The keys are also lockable so they aren't accidentally bumped and cause your music to skip all over the place.
The device has a wonderfully sized buffer and I had no problems with it during playback while cleaning out the gutters with the device stuffed away in my jacket pocket.
This system opens in clamshell style with a firm spring, but not so firm you feel like you have to use brute force to close it. The whole unit is slightly larger in diameter than a CD, and about an inch thick. The drive motor is located in the bottom half while the controls and display are located in the top half encased in a see-through plastic shell to allow you to see the CD spinning up and down.
It does have a tight operational temperature range so you do need to be aware of and careful for extreme temperature swings.
So far so good. Unfortunately, after three weeks of use and for no apparent reason, the LCD cracked leaving a purplish bruise going across it making the LCD almost completely useless for navigation.
The warranty is pretty clear about faulty materials being covered under normal usage and this happened during normal usage. I sent it back with the appropriate RA number and packaged and shipped it according to the instructions provided by Sony. A week after they signed for it, they send me an advisement that it will cost me USD$182 to repair the unit! I think, this must be a mistake and call Customer Service and had him read the warranty to me and he agreed there must be a mistake on the repair center's part. Well, Repair Center advises the unit was perfectly fine when we received it, therefore, not covered.
I'm given three choices to handle this problem:
1. Authorize the repair and pay the bucks.
2. Have them send it back, S&H charged to my card.
3. Have them dispose of it for me for no charge, but no refund will be issued.
I opted for Option 2 upping the total cost of this unit an additional $60 when all shipping, insurance, and return receipt costs are considered.
Sony, If you read these opinions, please be advised The product is faulty. Based on how easily your repair center can arbitrarily not back a clearly written warranty, you have permanently lost a customer on all of your products. I wouldn't even consider working for a company that can arbitrarily decide not to back a written warranty that clearly states how the device is to be covered. This is a shame because I do believe you are innovative and was considering your night shot camera, and a sub-sized laptop. My credit card company has been advised I am contesting your decision and expect to see a credit back from their direction.
Bottom line: I'm rating this unit witb only 1 star because of how easy it broke, and the repair center refused to back the warranty. If Sony fixes those two issues, this review could easily be 4 stars.
