THE DETAILS
Weight: 7 3/8 oz. without the batteries
Size: 6 5/16" x 1" x 5 1/8"
Power Requirements: 2 "AA" batteries (DC 4.5V)
I finally decided to stop fooling around with the cheapo units and get a decent portable. I wanted something that would last, as well as provide the features I wanted. Hence, the Sony CD Walkman D-CJ500 MP3/CD player.
The D-CJ500 will play music files downloaded and/or recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW CDs. I have yet to have a problem with ANY recorded disc, and some of my older ones are pretty buggered up. I have several set aside that don't seem to work in most units, that all had no problem playing without a hitch in the D-CJ500.
It has a two LINE/9 Character dot matrix LCD display that will give ID3 tag information for quick identification and location of your MP3 files. It's really easy to search all the music files even in another folder with it's easy access folder function. This and the ability to search through an individual song was a plus for me. I hate searching for the perfect song for the moment, or to have to wait for the particular part of a song I want to hear.
It also supports CD TEXT?, which allows you to easily see CD TEXT? information and ID3 information including song title, album title and artist name which is nice because you can't always remember who the artist is just by a song name.
Due to the fact that recording quality can differ, it
supports MP3 Bit Rates from 8-320 KBPS (kilobits per second) utilizing Variable Rate Playback ability which matches the playback Sampling Rate to the different recording quality of MP3 files. Of course it would be great if you could have all discs the same brand and quality, and sampling rates the same on each recording, but that's just not feasable. I have yet to hear a warble on any of my recordings.
Of course it carries Sony's 3rd generation of shock protection, "G-ProtectionTM Ultimate Skip Free G-Protection Technology, that combines a lighter servo mechanism and improved electronic circuitry, offering better protection against shock and providing skip free playback performance under rough conditions. Obviously why it refuses to skip under the most extreme conditions. It seems to skip less than the unit in my vehicle! Guess it's time to upgrade the in-dash unit too!
Styling is basic yet functional with easy to access controls and a very user friendly control panel which is nice when on the road.
With two decent "AA" batteries it has provided me around 45 hours of MP3 playback, and 50 hours of audio CD playback (not continuous).
I'm very happy in this regard, as I hate to have to carry extra batteries around or leave them in the vehicle for the sun or heat to drain.
I'm not really impressed with the provided headphones, the
Sony MDR (Micro Dynamic ReceiverTM) type. They seem somewhat substandard in quality and sound, so I purchased a decent set that was more to my liking, although the ones provided worked OK.
The only other drawback I found was it seems to have delays, beyond my liking, in reading the next MP3 file after a previous one. The delay in between songs and upon startup is not extremely excessive, I'm just impatient and prefer a quicker start.
The Sony D-CJ500 is perfect for anyone looking for a quality player at a decent price. I got two, one for me and one for my daughter. I got tired of buying one cheapo unit every six months to a year for her. It's well worth the investment to buy one that has quality, durability and the features you desire... and the Sony D-CJ500 was it for me.
