The Bottom Line:
If you need portable music and want easy access to it, the D-CJ506CK is a great find! Very slim and portable, comes with accessories, long battery life and easy navigation.
We were about to embark on a road trip from Madison, WI to San Antonio, TX and we wanted to take some music with us. I had been considering an in-dash cd-mp3 player, but they're still pretty expensive so I started to check out the portable cd/mp3 players. By using CDs, the effective memory is so much greater than a solid-state mp3 player and the unit is still a lot cheaper.
Then came the question of price. I found cd/mp3 players ranging from $50 all the way to $200. I was leaning towards a $89 model from RCA but it's package didn't describe any of it's features. I couldn't be sure what it would and wouldn't do. The Sony D-CJ506CK package listed everything I needed to know, I trust the Sony brand, and the sales clerk also recommended the Sony, so that clinched it. The main feature I was sure I needed was to be able to easily skip around the cd. When you have 200 songs on a disc, you don't want to have to skip them one at a time. The D-CJ506CK has folder forward/back buttons right up front so if I want to hear a particular album, I can easily jump to the right folder. The other required feature was a Random play command. The D-CJ506CK has just about every playback option I can think of. Play and repeat one track, one folder, or Random play and repeat one folder, or the whole disc. Random Play is particularly useful on a long road trip where it's difficult to keep a radio station tuned and you don't want to listen to the same album over and over. It's like having your own radio programming. Just burn a cd with a good mix and hit random!
The other bonus the D-CJ506CK has is that it comes with a cassette-player adapter and car power cord so it's ready to roll en route. (It also comes with an AC adapter and head phones.) So when we're done using it in the car, we can take it out to the gym or use it at home. It has the longest battery life of all the products - 24 hours of continuous MP3 playback (32 hours in CD mode)!
