The Bottom Line:
One of the best investments I have made in audio. Many nice features for the $69.99 price tag.
After my Sony (tape) Walkman died after several years of faithful service, it was time to get a new portable system. Originally, I had planned on replacing it with another tape Walkman, but decided against it, as nearly all of my music is on CD format. I did give thought to simply getting a radio Walkman, but decided against that, as it would limit my listening to whatever was on the radio. So, after much thought, I decided to be like kids everywhere today, and get a portable CD player).
I knew right away that I wouldn't be needing a car adapter, as my truck already has a CD player and changer in it. I also knew that I wanted a good skip protection system, as I was going to use my Walkman while working out, and it would be subjected to a great deal of movement. So, with these things in mind, it was time to go shopping, and after much searching and comparing, I decided on the Sony D-E225 Walkman CD player.
Features - What surprised me most about this system, is the amount of features that it has, and the fact that it is priced at an affordable $69.99. Want to know what they are and what they do?
*Remote CD control - This allows the Sony D-E225 to be turned on and off via a remote that is on the headphone cord so that you are not constantly digging the unit out of your bag or purse. Track selection, volume, stop, and hold can all be controlled with this remote.
*Stereo headphones with Sony MDR - This is the technology that Sony has developed for their portable sound systems. The result is an excellent, full sound, complete with three levels of bass settings.
*Two rechargeable batteries - By plugging in the Walkman using the supplied AC adapter, it also functions as a charger. The batteries for this unit last a whopping 25 hours during normal play.
*ESPMax Skip and G Protection - I'm not sure exactly what this feature is, but trust me when I say that this unit literally has to be thrown out of a moving vehicle before it skips. Basically, this skip protection gives this unit six time faster recovery from skips than other systems, thus preventing many skips during normal usage.
*Digital display - Volume, bass level, and track are all clearly displayed on the LCD screen on the top of the unit. Playback modes (normally, repeat, random/shuffle) are also displayed.
Sound - As I mentioned, the sound of this unit is wonderful, and the three bass levels really make listening to music very enjoyable. The stock headphones, although they appear a bit flimsy, are not so at all, and provide rich, full sound. At the time I purchased this unit, I thought that I would immediately replaced the headphones, but now I see no point; they work extremely well, and are very light and durable.
Size - The overall size of the Sony D-E225 is a bit bigger than a normal CD and is about 3/4 of an inch thick, making it very small and easy to carry just about anywhere. The unit is very light, but not flimsy or cheaply made, and is a metallic grey color.
Other features - I should mention that the Sony D-E225 Walkman comes with a standard warranty of 90 days labor, one year parts. There is also a nice feature on this unit, which makes it CD/R compatible. Meaning, while some of the older CD Walkman?s won't played "burned" or recorded discs, this one will, and since much of my music is copied from other discs (as I like to make mix discs), this feature was one that I decided would be a good idea to have. Finally, a ?hold? feature on both the unit and remote prevents buttons from accidentally being pushed (which is the major cause of unintended battery drain).
Overall thoughts - After using the Sony D-E255 Walkman CD player, I am extremely satisfied. This is quite a feature packed unit, with several of the features (skip protection, remote, CD/R compatible) found on units that cost much more. If you are looking for a quality made, great sounding portable CD player, I highly recommend the Sony D-E255, as it is a great unit for the money.
As always, thanks for reading!
