A Cheap, FREE Cd player

Pros Light, full function CD Player from Sony. Great sound Quality.
Cons Flimsy plastic construction / durability may be an issue
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  An excellent CD player for the price. Lots of features usually reserved for high end machines. Very functional. Long term durability may become an issue.
This review is adequate for the Sony E221, 221L and 226CK. The only difference between these three units is that the L model is blue in colour and the CK model has a car kit. The electronics, styling and design/units are otherwise identical in every way.

Free Player

This CD Player was a Sony Mastercard membership gift. When you sign up for a Sony Mastercard (back in November, 2001) you could get a free cd player and this was it.

The package (D-E221) comes with an ac adapter, cheap headphones and the cd player. What amazes me is how technology trickle down happens so quickly.

ESP (Electronic Skip Proctection) is built into this unit and works VERY well indeed. IT protects against jarring action and bumps for up to 25 seconds. I have NEVER had the cd player skip at all even with rough handling.

MEGA-Bass boost. This is a typical BASS boost features and makes your music "boom" a little louder. In fact, volume and sound fidelity on this unit is quite amazing. It is incredible crisp and clear and I would rate this one of the highest quality products in terms of audio fidelity - for the price.

Sony is renowned for its audio-visual products and I cannot emphasize how much I enjoyed this one.

CDR Capable

A big question that should come up for most young purchases is whether the CD player can play burned CD's. This one does so with flying colours. NOTE, it does NOT play CD-RWs but seems to handle CDR's fine. The other point to note is that MP3 is not handles on this low end player.

Excellent Battery Life

I remember when my first walkman had 90 minutes of battery life on ALKALINE Batteries. It amazes me that you can get ~25 hours on alkalines with this cd player. In addition, you can get about ~6-10 hours with NIMH rechargable batteries which is more than necessary for daily use (just recharge in between).

Durability Issues

Despite the overall design and electronics QUALITY from this SONY product, I must empasize the "flimsy" feeling of this all plastic design. Although it does make the walkman lighter, it also means that the thing feels like it would shatter with one good drop.

In fact, although I am a fond SONY proponent, I had to return the first player I got as it failed within the first week that I got it. Although I wouldn't expect this of most SONY products (remember the burn-in curve/failure of all electronics) - the machine started making clicking noises and not playing after about a week's use.

The replacement product has been functioning fine since though.

Overall

I have no problem recommending this Sony product. Excellent audio quality and remarkable inclusion of features (CDR capable, MegaBass, ESP) make this remarkable for its price ($60 retail - FREE for me). Plastic construction at this low end of the price spectrum makes lasting durability a concern. This is especially true since I've had one fail on me. However, if it breaks, this item is so inexpensive you can just use it as an excuse to upgrade!
