Battery Life, & You can't jog with it.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
I would recommed this to anybody who is NOT planning to use this player while riding a bike, jogging, running, etc.
Intro...I bought this CD player at...
I bought this CD player about 2 years ago. Sony has always been my favorite brand for audio products. Even though this player is one of my older ones, it still sounds better than some of my newer players!

Looks...Well, not something I would expect.
I have to say that this design is below what I expect from Sony. It is not to sleek and it has a large looking size. The actual size is 5in. x 5.7in. x 1.0in. The color is a shiny kind of silver and the buttons are a darker shade of gray.

Display... Its your classic LCD screen.
This display is an LCD screen. It is easy to read and it has a battery indicator on it too. This is very convienent because when I am in the car and I see the battery indicator is low I can just go and stop by the store and pick some up.

AVLS...Automatic Volume Limiting System.
Even though this system is rather old, it does have quite a bit of technology. One of those features is Sony's automatic volume limiting system. I barley ever use this feature but it is good for a parent who doesn't want their children listening to music to loud. For me the music is too low unless it is rock. For other kinds of music I have to turn this feature off.

Sound Quality... Better than most!
I am not sure why but the sound quality on this CD player is absolutley supurb. I wasn't expecting it to be that good when I bought it because even than it wasn't very new. It ended up being better than most of my other players, even my new ones! The sound is very clear and there is absolutley no static. The sound is more detailed and clearer and crisp than many players, even the ones made today.

Durability...Very durable, especially with me!
So far all of the players I have had, especially Sony's have been very durable. I have dropped it, and dropped it and dropped it dozens of times and it didn't break on the inside nor get dents on the outside. This player seems to be just as durable as newer and more high-end players. The only bad durability factor I have seen is the cover of the topload mechanism. It is attatched rather flimsily. I don't know if Sony had reasoning for this but I am fine because mine is still intact.

Skipping...Don't look here joggers!
This player has ESP2. It stands for Electronic Skip Protection Two. The ESP2 is a big inprovment from ESP, it works so much better. It has around 20 seconds of skip protection. That is were newer models are much better. Most new players have 40 seconds of skip protection or Sony's unbeatable G-Protection. Although I defend this player I have to say that this is one area where this player falls to the newer generation of players.

Remote...Another cool Sony feature.
Another cool gadget alot of Sony players have is a remote. This is very convienent. You can put the player in your backpack and just hold the remote. It is a 4-pin remote and it plugs into the side of a player. I use it when I put the player In my pocket.

Batteries... Ok, but not the best.
The average battery life for me with two alkaline AA's is 14-15 hrs. This is plenty for me considering I only use this player a few times a week.

My oh so important Epinions on the d-e401.
Ok, well overall I think this is a pretty nice player considering its age. Although there are better players on the market this player has very good sound quality compared to most. I have enjoyed the sound quality and I love to use it to listen to my most detailed CD's. I love using the playback mode because It is kind of like a radio. You never know what song is going to come up next. The program is also nice too. I like to use that feature sometimes while I am falling asleep or dozing off. Compared to some of my other CD players this program memory can only hold 22 tracks. Most CD players can hold up to and over 40 tracks. This is not really an inconvience for me because only a few of my CD's have over 22 songs on them. Although the battery life is not great, Sony makes up for it with excellent sound quality. The anti-shock is one thing I wish I could have changed about this player. 20 second is not enough anti-shock to do basically any activity. The remote control is also something I love because it makes this player even easier to use.

Conclusion... I would recommend this to...
I would recommeANd this to anybody who is NOT planning to use this player while riding a bike, jogging, running, etc. Besides that it is a very nice player with lots of features considering its age. This player has stood the test of time and to this day is still a very good player.
