Sony Walkman D-EJ100 Personal CD Player

Pros appearance, very light, produces great sound, rarely skips, great in cars
Cons maybe the cost, harder time with worn CD's
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a great player for a car or for an active person, and it looks good while you are using it!
Getting a car with the basics (meaning no tape deck and no CD player), I knew I was going to have to pick up a new compact disc player if I was going to have a good music selection on long drives. Having not had one in a while, I also knew that I wanted one that would be easy to carry while going for walks. So, my requirements were simple when I went into the store: light-weight, and it had to be able to work in my car. I came across the Sony Walkman D-EJ100 Personal CD Player, and what really caught my eye were the odd colors that it was available in. Bright reds and greens, with different colors circling the center display screen. I ended up going with green on black, and purchased it for less than $50.00. I was well on my way to getting my car up to musical specifications.

My old handheld CD player was a Sony as well, but it was very worn out, and had seen better days. One of the great things I noticed right away about this model, was the digital screen being at the center top of the player. My older one was near an edge, making it very vulnerable to scratches and other intangibles in my house (cats). The other thing that was a big plus, was the readability of the display, and that I could see it from a distance. This was a plus, because I knew I would be messing with it while driving, and I knew that it needed to be able to give me my information after a quick glance. This player does just that, and the buttons are spaced far enough apart, that it makes it easy to feel with your fingers without having to look down at the player.

The headphones that the player comes with are less than satisfactory in my opinion. While they are sleek, they aren't comfortable for me to wear, and after trying them out once, I have gravitated back to an older pair. This isn't really an issue for me though, because I like the full headphones that go over your head for the simple reason that they won't fall off while I am doing something. The clip-on headphones are a device that fits into or over your ears so you can listen to music without disturbing those people around you. They are also intended to be very light, so that you can wear them just about anywhere. I will give them credit for being aesthetically pleasing, but in the end, they just weren't what I was looking for. I have been good to my headphones through the years though, and they outlast my devices, so I have plenty of options to switch between.

I was taking a risk when I bought a player that didn't guarantee its skip control, but I fell under the assumption that this player would be good enough for me. While driving and the player is plugged in, the player actually does have a Skip-Free G-Protection Technology built into it. This seems to do the trick quite well, because unless I am falling into a pot-hole, it keeps my CD's from skipping. However, there are some slight problems with older, more well-worn CD's that I put into the player. It gets a little more picky as the condition of the CD that I put in gets worse. There are times where a CD has a scratch and the player doesn't care, but other times when there are several, and the player just throws a tantrum. I wouldn't expect it to be perfect in that department though, because most players don't play everything perfectly. With new CD's though, the skipping just doesn't happen, and if I am good to my CD's, the player is good to me.

For going out in public with the player on, it is great at drawing out the sounds around me. One thing that I found really great about this player, is the sound quality that emanates from it. Either I have been stuck back in the stone-age with older players, or this one has a few bells and whistles that really bring out the instruments on my CD's. My example is "Hotel California" by the Eagles, which sounds crystal clear on this player, and even better than when I first got the album. There are different sound settings that you can play with on this model, and if you need to adjust the bass that is available for you too. It all comes down to your preference, and just how much "bump" you want coming out of your headphones.

Going back to the physical lay-out of the player, you have two slots with which to connect your head-phones and the external jack for your car or wall-adapter. The buttons available are the norm, with Play, Stop, a track forward, and a track backwards. The volume control is located on the side of the player, and the Hold button is on the bottom of it. The player also has a slide-button that is used to open up the player, rather than having one that you push down. This is better for me, because I am always hitting buttons, and you really don't want the CD case popping open during a long drive. This makes it so that you have to want to open the player for it to happen. I find the buttons very easy to work with, no matter what the setting of my usage is.

Overall, I have found this player to be really great for all of my needs. It doesn't eat through batteries like I remember my old player doing, and advertises that they will have a life of 50 hours with this machine. It also comes with a remote (a remote that is still attached) that will let you set aside the player, and can be used on those same car rides. One other thing I should mention is that the player does well with CDR's and CDRW's in a fashion that really sets it apart from other players I have used. My end recommendation, is that this player is great not only for a car, but for an active person as well. The no-skip protection goes a long way to keeping everyone happy. I highly recommend this model, because I have yet to find anything really wrong with it. It is light, does its job, and doesn't ever give me a reason to complain.
