The Bottom Line:
Read my 'Verdict'
$80 can go a long way these days... Or at least $80 can buy you a Sony D-EJ611. I have retired my older Sony discman, and purchased myself a brand new Sony D-EJ611. I just took it on my trip to NYC, and cruise throughout New England. The Sony D-EJ611 was much better than my previous one, and when I was buying one, I was hesitating in buying a Sony again. I looked at other models from brands like Philips and JVC. I didn't want Panasonic due to my past experiences with their products. In all aspects, the Sony D-EJ611 had all the features that I wanted... The only thing that I actually wanted it to do was to play CDs, along with dynamic sound, rather than that distorted sound you may find on older or other CD players. So, after a while of usage with the Sony D-EJ611, here's what I found.
Price:
I wasn't looking for bells and whistles when I was buying a CD player. With the Sony D-EJ611, you get excellent sound quality. You may not get a tuner or anything like that, but you still get great sound, and a great new ESP. The Sony D-EJ611 incorporates Sony's G-protection which completely stops skipping. The protection and sound goes pretty far for an $80 player. The sound quality surpassed JVC and Philips... The models which were in the same price range, or even a little bit higher. If you don't care for a tuner or a lot of bells and whistles, then the Sony D-EJ611 is a great choice.
Looks and Styling:
The Sony D-EJ611 is a decent looking discman. I'd have to admit that the Philips counter parts look better, but looks aren't everything. There are some really cool looking portable CD players on the market, but you don't get good sound quality with many of them. The Sony D-EJ611 does look pretty bland, but that is OK.
Durability:
In such a short period of time, the Sony D-EJ611 has survived quite a bit of abuse. I dropped it to the ground a couple of times, and yes! It still worked! I also spilled a can of Pepsi on it, and it didn't die. The coolest thing was that the sound quality didn't diminish. I've got a frined who had a Panasonic Shockwave, which costed him a lot. After he dropped it a few times, the sound began to worsen. One time, he spilled soda on it, and it stopped working. The Shockwave was also a lot more expensive than most models from Sony. Well, it can be concluded that this is one die-hard discman, this thing should last.
Sound:
I've been through some discmans, or at least heard many. Many of them had distortion, and sounded pretty... cheap and flat. When I heard some models from Philips, I was pretty impressed. I was about to buy one for $120, but then I saw someone with the Sony D-EJ611. I listened to it, and was quite impressed. He also let me bang it onto the table top, and it didn't skip! I was very impressed with the sound. On my cruise, it sounded great. Sure it didn't sound anything like my home theaters, but the sound was comparable to an Audiophase minisystem or something like that. The sound on the Sony D-EJ611 was quite dynamic, clear, and there was less bass distortion on the Sony D-EJ611 than other CD players. The Philips models had more distortion in the lower ranges. If you want to get great sound that doesn't skip, then the Sony D-EJ611 is a great idea.
Bass:
The Sony D-EJ611 had a good bass response. With some cheaper and older discman players, there was often quite a bit of bass distortion. Play the song Save Me on a cheaper or older Sony with Mega Mass up to maximum, and you'll see what I mean. The Sony D-EJ611 had less bass distortion with other players. The bass was also not exaggerated, it sounded rather smooth.
Ease of Use:
The buttons are in easy access, and unlike the buttons on Philips CD players, they aren't tiny. It is easy to program the Sony D-EJ611 and use everything. I love the interface, very easy to use. Nearly perfect for beginners! Or at least for everyone else, it takes the hassles and fear out of using electronics. Ideal for an average user!
The Verdict:
The Sony D-EJ611 has everything that you can want, very clear and dynamic sound, no skipping, and some other neat features. This player really does sound good. It's also very easy to use, and is very durable. That's what I love about it. Considering a discman in the $100 price range? Look no further, the Sony D-EJ611 is here.
