Above Average w/ GREAT anti-skip

Pros Light, small, excellent antiskip. Good for the price.
Cons Could have better sound, more reliable remote, work better with burned cds
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  It's a great little CD player. If you're going to run with it, use the carrying case.
The main reason I was looking for a portable CD player was for jogging. I was getting sick of listening to the same tapes, didn't want to make any more tapes, and was annoyed w/ the sound quality of tapes. As for Minidiscs, I didn't want to enter into a new technology after having all this sunk cost w/ CDs. With regards to a portable MP3 players, they don't have enough memory, and I don't want to spend all that time loading new music over and over.

I did some research and decided to look at the Sony D-EJ815. I went to the store to see how it handled. So I asked the guy at the counter if I could test the G-Shock technology. I stood there and shook the player for over 2 minutes, and it didn't skip. Often times the antiskip memory eventually gets eaten up if the jarring is continuous, but it didn't seem to happen here. (The Sports Panasonic w/ the 40 sec Shockwave protection also passed the test.) I went ahead and bought the Sony b/c is was lighter, sleeker, and smaller than the Panasonic. Since then I have jogged with it several times, and it has yet to skip. The carrying case is convenient for jogging, as well, although it is a bit annoying to hold in your hand while running (haven't bothered w/ a belt carrying case, so it must not be that annoying). I have yet to jog in the rain with the player, so I don't know how well it does when a little bit of water gets on it. Hopefully the case will protect it enough.

As for the sound, it is decent. The max volume could be louder since there is AVLS. The bass boost can really distort the sound, so I don't turn up the bass so much (which is no big deal to me). As everyone else says, the headphones are terrible. I think that Sony knew that people would probably replace the headphones anyway. (If you include earbuds, people want the other kind, and vice versa. Should they go around the neck or top of the head or just be wires? There are so many views on headphones.)

Opening the player is a bit annoying. The clasp is on the front, so the player is difficult to hold and open with one hand.

The player has difficulty w/ some CD-Rs. It will get stuck between songs, and you have to hit the FF button.

The remote is pretty cool w/ the backlight and all the functionality you really need. I have had some trouble with it, though. It seems to not work sometimes, and I really have to push the connection into the player. Maybe I have a lemon or my leads need to be cleaned. Also, when the player gets stuck between songs while playing a burned CD, you have to FF on the player itself...can't use the remote to FF.

Battery life is good (10+ hours). I have yet to use the external battery case or the optical out.

All in all, this is a pretty decent player for the price, despite all my gripes; however, if you are an audiophile, this probably isn't the player for you.

Jan. 16, 2002 UPDATE: I had the CD player in my pocket the other day while I was headed to the gym. It's cold these days, but I wasn't bundled up, so I started to run. The CD player was really swinging around in my pocket and began to skip.

Also a while back, the player just stopped working. Sony fixed it for free. Since then, the remote has worked perfectly.
