The Bottom Line:
Overall, this is a great CD-Player with a price of $110, incredible skip-protection, and battery-life. Perfect for those who travel, like to run, or just want an awesome CD-Player.
The Sony D-EJ815 is a great all-around CD Player with loads of features and options. When I purchased this CD-Player a few months ago, I was having a dilemma between purchasing a Sony CD-Player with the G-Protection, or an MP3 CD-Player. But the D-EJ815 with its insane skip protection, battery life, slim body, and price pushed me over onto the side of Sony.
First of all, I loved Sony?s G-Protection skip protection system. It is practically ?Skip-Free*? like the box says, but the MP3 CD-Players out now do not have the Skip Protection technology to compete with the G-Protection. On a few occasions I was able to skip the D-EJ815, but not involuntarily. It was more like sitting down at my desk with nothing to do and just feeling like making this baby skip. It took me a good few minutes, but hey it is possible. But trust me, the D-EJ815 will not skip. I have dropped it on the sidewalk and it still did not skip, but it did get a little scratched up L. What the G-Protection system does to provide this virtually skip-free environment is that it constantly loads the data on the Audio CD into its memory and if it is getting bumpy, it just increases the rpm of the CD inside to get to the data before the user can hear it. In other words, this baby is always, well most of the time, ahead of you.
Another thing that caught my attention was the unreal 76 hours of battery life on the D-EJ815. Originally having one of the first Discmans and all of the sudden upgrading to this baby with 76 hours of battery life was just amazing. I had like 4 hours of battery life it seemed on my old Discman and it felt as if I was paying for more batteries than how much I paid for my Discman. The D-EJ815 also came with 2 Rechargeable Batteries, which can be automatically recharged in the D-EJ815. But there is a draw back to this feature of increased battery life. There is a protrusive, little battery holder that hangs from only a flimsy cord that you have to attach to the CD-Player to achieve this increased battery life. Fortunately, even without the add-on battery case you can achieve great battery life.
The D-EJ815 also came with a handy little remote. When I first looked at it I believed it was just an ordinary remote with the basic options (Play, Stop, Next Track,), but this little piece of plastic could do anything the D-EJ815 could do and more. It also had its own back glow button, which I wish was also included on the D-EJ815 itself. The problem I had with this remote was that it increased the length of the headphone cord. Of course, I trashed the original headphones that came with the D-EJ815, and bought a pair of Sony Street-Style Headphones. Unfortunately, the Street-Style Headphones already have a pretty lengthy cord compared to other headphones and combined with the remote; it just got a little too long. I do use the remote when I am in the car, plane, and sometimes when I run, but during regular use it is just a hassle.
One of the biggest letdowns with the D-EJ815 I experienced was the sound quality. I believe I probably got better sound with my ancient Discman than with the D-EJ815. All in all, it just did not compete with some of the other CD-Players in sound. This is the area where I thought an MP3 CD-Player could excel at because I believe that the newer ones have an equalizer and different settings for different types of music. For the most part, the sound is average, but it was just not satisfying sometimes to my needs. I have also had some problems with a couple of my burned CD-R?s with them having a longer load time. But I don?t know whether the problem is the CD-R, or the D-EJ815.
All in all, the D-EJ815 is a quality CD-Player with many useful features including the G-Protection, and the unbelievable 76 hours of battery life. The D-EJ815 shows that Sony has finally come back with a quality product after a few unsatisfying CD-Players. The D-EJ815 is just perfect for those who like to travel, exercise with a little music, or just need a CD-Player with tons of great features and options.
