I was looking to buy a brand new portable CD player. I love Sony products and was looking at a few of their models. While surfing Hifi.com I discovered the D-EJ815 for $149.99. What was interesting to me was that I had not seen it on Sony's website. It offered a mind blowing 40 hours of battery power on 2 AA batteries! It also had a green glowing backlit display and something called G-Protection technology. This is different from ESP2 that the current Discman's have. Sony's website describes it best saying:

"G-Protection (Joggable)
This breakthrough technology is able to consistently and completely protect against continuous shock. The concept of G-Protection is a complete paradigm shift from current methods of shock protection in the Portable CD player market. Presently, shock protection works by compressing music data, and storing in the Random Access Memory (RAM) that acts as a memory buffer. Once the memory is used up, music skips.

Envisioning skip-free music, Sony continuously strives to explore new options that rely less on memory buffer. Through research and development, Sony engineers found the answer in improving the speed of recovery during the active music data reading process. Named G-Protection, Sony's latest Skip-free System, achieves quick recovery of music data reading through quick focus, fine access and efficient reading and storing of data. With G-Protection, the D-EJ01 is able to withstand continuous shock by recovering quickly to read data even before the next shock begins.

In fact, Sony engineers collected sampling data of the average jogging pace of people in the Central Park, USA, and concluded that on average, people jog at a pace of 3 steps every second. G-Protection technology is thus designed to recover, read and store data within one-third of a second! That means listeners can literally jog with their favorite CD without missing a beat. Furthermore, with no compression of the music data, users are able to enjoy 16-bits sampling, which is the true definition of CD sound."

Anyway this is a very interesting technology. With faster recovery, CD's can now be virtually skip free. I put it to the test and after shaking it for 10 minutes straight it did not skip! This is amazing to think that as little as 5 years ago CD's skipped just by setting the player on the table. Sony should be commended for finally making a product you can listen to while playing sports! Very cool indeed. Oh and did I mention it lasts 40 hours with 2 AA's with this feature ON!

This player has all the standard features of a portable CD. These include shuffle, repeat, hold, play one track, and up to 50 track programmable! I have never seen 50 track programmability on a CD player like this before.

Another great feature is the remote. With it, you can control every function of the player. I usually put the player on hold, put it in my bag, and just use the remote. That way the player cannot be activated while inside. I have seen similar remotes on other brands but not one that gives you the track number, time, play mode, and battery status.

The player also has MD Link digital out for CD to MD digital recording. I have not used this feature yet but it sounds very useful for you MD people. You can also use the digital out to hook it up directly to your home stereo. This way you get crystal clear sound compared to using you headphone jack.

It is made out of aluminum, which gives it a very sturdy feel. Not like the cheep plastic that most other portable CD's are made of. I have dropped it a few times and not even a scratch has surfaced! Heck, it did not even skip a beat!

All of this would mean nothing if it didn't sound good. Well it does not sound good, it sounds great! Best that I have ever heard out of any portable CD player. It blows my brothers Panasonic out of the water! It even plays badly damaged CD'S that other will reject. Also, it plays CD-R's that you can create on your computer.

In short, buy this player! It has everything you would ever want or need in a CD player for only $149.99!
